12 months ago by chance, I sent a letter to the first owners address, and "bingo" he still lives there! Amongst interesting bit's of history, I found out that mine had come from "Stormont", Tunbridge Wells.
On this note, is there any way to find out the original reg of an imported car ? I have all the V5's going back to when the car came into the UK, but I want to find out the original German plate.
Any idea.s ?

only if you have the first owner's name and address or the Fahrzeugbrief.
As you may or may not know, in Germany every time a car is registered or re-registered (even if the car is "abgemeldet"/SORN i.e. laid up for 6 months) even by the same person, the car gets a new reg no and set of plates.

ex-squaddies car was it?
Yes it was an Ex-squaddies car, sadly I don't have any names, the only one I have is a Bert Flowers from Kent, he is the one who bought it into the UK, so I am guessing he was the squaddie.
Oh and BTW mine came directly from Zakspeed in Germany

may well have been registered AW - xxx then?
You could always ask Zakspeed if they have any record of your VIN and documentation on the sale and reg. no I suppose.
Most obvious is of course chatting to the person that imported it.
I don't know of a service like the one DVLA do, with all the old documents, the changes of plate and owner are documented on the Fahrzeugbrief (V5) here which is only replaced when there is no space left on the document to record and new owner or registration process.
I have tried zakspeed but no reply, even had a couple of german ford peeps (oldtimers) trying to trace the VIN for me but no luck there either.
Also tried looking for Bert flowers but came up a blank there.
are zakspeed still going ? I was told in the 80's they were a new Ford dealer, hence my car was bought by them.. unless it was some sort of demo car, hence the strange non std colour ?

If a car's been exported I assume all records have deleted anyway, the only way to find out then is through finding someone who bought it new or s/hand I suppose.
I have the original bill of sale which states that my car was sold from Drysdales Fife Ltd Westfield Garage, Cupar and they're dealer sticker is on my back window but the car was supplied to them from Mogil Motors (Stirling) Ltd, Union Street and Drip Road, Stirlingshire Scotland
