I had a 1/2 wave ariel on a 40 foot + pole and a 22w 140 channel boosted Midland AM/FM set and a cheapo car set with a mag mount,

the Home set I could talk to the UK and US from South Africa when I lived there

handle on the cb was and still is johnny5 , even met the wife on it , been into the radio now for about 20 years, past the cb bit and went onto Amateur Radio , and spent thousands on the ****in things , last month spent over a grand on a new radio and the ****in thing is up the stairs gathering dust, but hey it keeps the wife happy

Cobra 148 GTL DX with uusb & llsb fitted run through a 250 watt burner with a Turner Supersidekick Mic and 20' hi-gain pole.
Still got it all in the loft somewhere .
Handle was Cooperman (as per Russ Abbot and that I had a Mini Cooper)
Side Band was Charlie Mike 152 spoke to people all over the world and at one time a friend who was on holiday in Nova Scotia.

My dads into the old valve radios,he's had them since the 50's and there is a room full of the stuff mostly ex naval i think or things that were in planes during the war.

think i just missed the cb era just like the cars everyone else my age had mk1 astra gte or golf gti etc

A.M in the late seventies with me old man,he had one set up in his motor spares shop and sold them,half of hadfield(royston vasey) where we lived ended up with them!Then on to fm later . 1-4 a copy come on or was it 1-9? Had various units inc a hand held which was great for meeting the ladies in my early teens ! Also had the big firk off TWIG in the loft! Handle was Chevy, as in 454 blocked version in my old mans stock car!

I bought a Midland 3001 with my christmas money in 1981 as soon as they were legal, out of Dixons for 20 quid. I still have it in my lorry today...
I had a new 1 but it was rubbish
No-one ever uses them anymore though, the consolation is the music playing ****s and wind up merchants have all disappeared too

jesus johine thiose where the days lol i started with a sharp 40 then got a vice presdiant 80 then a sommercamp 340 then the daddy of them a black face super star 3900 and still have it today used it 4 years while i drove long distance hgvs, it was the set that had the bleep after u keyed the mike lol my handle was the roadrunner

Even by my time in the USA, CB was on the decline but when I came back to UK and was doing rallies in Belgium we made use of UK FM CB. Local CB there was AM and (for reasons we never worked out) the only interlopers on FM were a French team. Compared to the UK, FM was clear and loud out there and thus quite useful. I did sometimes worry we might have been inadvertently calling in a ground attack by the Belgian Airforce though...
