  • another falls by the wayside

you aren't gonna believe me on this, but i think my head gasket has gone/is going again

last thursday i took it out to bed the new brakes in, and on my way home in traffic the revs dropped off and the engine became lumpy, when home i teaked the idle to keep the thing running. i took it into work today to try to make my mind up what is going on, and when i got home the lumpyness was worse and the idle screw needed tweaking again to keep it running, i richened the mixture screws half a turn to help pick the idle up so i could do more investigating, and as before cylinders 3 and 4 are very weak, when i pull the HT lead off each one the engine barely notices, infact with 3 and 4 off together it happily bounced around and when i put them back on only minimal improvement was noticed.

i know it was running too much ign advance which prolly killed the last two gaskets off, and this one was subjected to a few hundred miles with incorrect timing, but now that was all sorted i thought i'd be ok, well it appears not

now i have two choices, grab a gasket tomorrow from ford and swap it over weds/thursday evening and set off friday panicing if its gonna make the trip to the dam

or f**k it, take the daily hack, stay calm and sort it when i get back

i am happy ( reasonably ) to try one more gasket now that the timing is correct, but if it goes again i'll have to whip it out, get it checked out and rebuilt

not a happy bunny, was well excited too for this weekend

It won't have been the timing, over advanced timing will first melt the plugs then the valve seats then the pistons, unless it was running too hot too often.

Fit a new temp sender to make sure next time. I would suggest that either the head has a crack/hairline fracture somewhere/is warped or rings/valve seats are ****ed.

I suppose the last gaskets you used were Ford or Burton's?

If the gasket has gawn twice in a short space of time summat else is wrong for definite, good luck finding out what

not me it doesn't f*@ki!ng cars, had years of that chasing faults that were there every fourth time.
Never say never, just when you think poor starting can have nowt to do with the ABS wiring think again, I had it all, worse than being a doctor, I should imagine, still at least a car doesn't moan when you hit it with a hammer

Not good Lee. Are you sure the head is true and the deck face square????? Could be slightly warped maybe??? Best of luck in finding out what it is.

You know Tim, I had considered that. And if Lee wants to, he can. Well, at least I would drive the MK1 and he could drive the MK2.

its not a crack, cos when it goes back together its ok for a few hundred miles, a crack would run poo straight away

will try again for classic ford show 1st june

just said it could be, BTW as I said, never say never with cars, it has to be summat fairly major if the gasket keeps letting go, take it the threads in the block are good?
