  • frustration in terminal 5

had to go to germany this week and had the mis-fortune to be booked on British Airways departing and arriving via terminal 5. What an absolute shambles from start to finish!
Delayed on Thursdays outward trip by 45 mins as not enough ground crew available to load plane but reurn trip last night was so bad it ended up making me speechless with amazement.
Rain and a couple of crashes on the autobahn caused traffic jams which delayed our arrival at frankfurt airport. The automated BA check in system wasn't working so I had to go to a desk where I was told that my flight was delayed for an unknown period because the pane i was due to fly home on hadn't yet left Heathrow on its outward flight yet! All wasn't lost yet because an earlier (18:40) flight was also delayed and if i rushed i could catch that one instead. Rushed around through security etc and got to the departure gate with 10 mins to spare to find my new flight (which was already 1hour 20 mins late) was going to be delayed even further. So many people had decided not to risk putting luggage in the hold all of the overhead lockers were crammed full and one passengers hand luggage spent the flight on the flight deck as there was nowhere else for it to be stowed! Eventually took off over 2 hours late and flew in to Heathrow, nice smooth landing, taxied upto the terminal building and sat on the sodding plane for 50 minutes before a member of the airport staff who was qualified in connecting the walkway to the plane could be found and the sodding door opened! what a f*****g shower of sh*t.
when i got off the plane i thought i was home and dry but it took 50 minutes to clear the airport and get to to the bus stop, The inside of the building isn't finished yet and the route to baggage claim (which luckily hadn't been lost) involves walking a long way, going down three sets of escalators, a ride on the monorail, going back up three escalators to passport control, back down again to ground level to the luggage carousels before eventually exiting the building. Was i ready for a fag after that one!!!
If any one is thinking of using terminal 5, take my advice, dont! Fly a different airline, fly from a different airport, catch the eurostar, drive there, do anything but use the worst excuse for a modern airport possible

no experience of T5, but all London airports 'til now were fine in my experience.

Although a little of the Germans miserable but sober "Ordnung" may be applicable in this case

I always make a point now not to fly British Airways, even if the alternative is more expensive. Utterly useless, and couldn't give a shit about customer service.

At least it (T5) was on time and on budget. Is it the terminal or the staff who are at fault or a bit of both.

You just know the olympics is going to be a complete shambles and will cost an absolute bloody fortune.

How did Britian ever build an empire?

I dont think that I can blame a building, possibly the architect who thought it was a good idea to make the passengers go down and up and back down again wants an ar"e kicking though. I think a lot of the delay problems stem from staff issues; like there aren't enough and some of them have been poorly trained. If you agree with that the only people to blame are the higher levels of management who take home a nice big salary and think customer service is an old fashioned and non essential idea. You just know that nobody at board level will accept resposibility for it though.

                      BA. Bloody Awful.

Ask the families of the slaves that were forced to work for nowt or next to nowt and treated like sh@t, since those days I think most projects have gone over budget

There was a program on five about it called big, bigger, biggest. Some very interesting problems with the project. Stuff like the roof is only a couple of metres below the flight path so they couldn't use cranes. The concrete is stupidly strong to take the weight of the new bigger planes that now take up more room so need specially designed platforms.

Its a cool project, but like all projects its got teething problems.
