£12'500 for one of those?? They were a very nice car 30 years ago but they weren't THAT great. Sorry but 12.5 big ones buys a more interesting car than a leaf sprung Escort with a 1600 Cortina engine.
I had a 2 litre powered white one back in 1988 and one night I got absolutely destroyed by a BMW M3 - and £12'500 buys a very nice example of one. I know, I had one of those too.

Can see where you are coming from. As standard a Mexico is crap to drive and so slow nowadays. For 12.5k you can almost buy a Porsche 3.3 Turbo from the early 80's which is what I would go for if I was spending that sort of money.

its not just about buying the car tho. its also about maintenance and the cortina engine is alot cheaper to run. imagine the bill to rebuild some of these engines nowadays.

Don't get me wrong, it does look a stunning example. I wondered why Ford even bothered with the Mark 2 Mexico when they weren't a lot better than the 1600 Sport - better interior and seats and marginally better handling. But the Sport was just as fast in the real world and it's 0-60 time was around a second faster - that's the 3.89 diff! The Harrier was better still, a cracking little car and I bet you could buy a pearler for £5000.
A 1600 Golf GTi would slaughter both of them, and you don't see those selling for £12'500. The Golf was a far more significant 'classic' as well. It seems to me that Escort prices now don't bear any relation to what they should be worth. When new they were a cheap and cheerful go faster car for the lads but if someone offered me £25'000 for an RS1600, I'd be cashing it in!
My M3 was a 2.5 Sport Evolution, the last stretch of the 16v 4 pot. I bought it in concours condition for £12'500 in 2002 yet now it's worth £20'000 plus so maybe everthing old and racy is going daft. I should have hung on to it!!

Just to point you in the right direction, all MkII Escorts @ 1600cc or above had virtually the same running gear spec e.g. 3.54:1 diff 9" rear drums and 9.6" disc brakes. The Mex had Sport/Base trim (no full length carpeted door trim panels etc) and an RS dash and seats.

The Mex was no longer available when the Harrier came about and that model was loaded-up with all the goodies to shift the remaining shells not compete with a non existent model.
