Just to point you in the right direction, all MkII Escorts @ 1600cc or above had virtually the same running gear spec e.g. 3.54:1 diff 9" rear drums and 9.6" disc brakes. The Mex had Sport/Base trim (no full length carpeted door trim panels etc) and an RS dash and seats.
The Mex was no longer available when the Harrier came about and that model was loaded-up with all the goodies to shift the remaining shells not compete with a non existent model.
You're right, Sports and Ghias had a 3.54, the 1300 Sports having a ludicrous 4.11. My yellow 1600 Sport had a 3.89 but it was a Shellsport car and had been "well used". My Mexico had full door trims up to the windows, that useless glovebox type thing and a centre console. It was a 1976 P reg car.
The Harrier appeared around 18 months - 2 years after the demise of the Mexico so it was never a competing model - I didn't say it was. But in 2008 it is a competing model as a secondhand/classic car. If a Mark 2 Mexico is really worth 10 grand plus I'll go for the Xflow powered car thanks!
