is the front bulkhead lip bashed flat?? i thought all bda powered mk1's had that hammered flat, my old mex had that portion flattened, either because at some point it ran a bda, or just sheer corrosion

also before getting to excited many standard mk1 mexicos where booked as rs1600s, so you cant go by that, perhaps the avo club may have previous owners details i have had 4 mexicos that where all original and stated rs1600 on the logbook ,back in the day you could have called it anything you wanted and theres a fair chance it would say it on the v5 , its a lot different these days you would have to trace the original owner if the avo club cant help you out .
            lets hope its a bda

same as all these Harrier owners that change their V5s to read Harrier, when originally it stated Escort Sport, which of course is right.

You could always change V5s no problem.

I do remember Mex's being described as RS16s, even the engine codes on some RS 16s were L7 just to confuse Mex owners

I've come across that twice... but on both occasions it has stated L5 in the Type box on the VIN tag & C as the model type on the colour tag.
Both cars had their original tags.

If the car on this thread as had Mexico on the log book since 1981 It's got a good chance if it is registerd with the AVO club, they will know it as a Mexico too.

If you want to find the first owner I may be able to help.

My engine has the chassis number on it.
If you look at the car from the front it is on the righthand side of the block.
It also has another number on the block at the back but I will have to check that to see what it says.

yeah, that is the same as nearly every other Ford, just the HRE engined RS18s are the only Fords that I know of that don't have engine no as the back half of the VIN

The first owner was Roy Robinson from Leeds - good luck in finding him! I have found the guy who owned the car in 1981 and 1982 at the time when it changed from RS1600 to Mexico. I'm speaking to him on Monday hopefully. I've also tracked down the owner after him who fitted the 711M engine and changed the colour to yellow. After this the car went to a mate of mine who pulled it to bits - it was horribly rusty even then.
Now, my Dad - who had a Mexico from new - told me that both the Mexico and RS2000 were more desirable used than an RS1600 which had a reputation for being a pain in the bum. I wonder if this is why it was done. Not that it did much good because the car was last taxed in 1984.

Was his postcode LS17 OEG or LS25 1DN if so he's not moved house.

Otherwise I have the address details for the two above postcodes.
Both Roy Robinsons living in the Leeds area. Might be worth a try.

Sorry, Roy Robinson lived in Outwood in Wakefield. Owner number 2, Michael Scott, lived in Leeds. The DVLA copies are really crap but it looks like Owner 2 bought it in December '74.
These were both on the original green logbook. There is no record of the third owner (November 1980), just the fourth (Rob Withers) who lived in Tamworth. The car was sold in May 81 to a guy in Doncaster who I've located and colour changed from white to black.
It was sold agin to someone else in Doncaster in June 1982 and oddly, changed back to white. You can tell it was becoming a typical Escort shed.
It was sold again in 1985 and stripped.

If it turns out to be an RS1600, it'll be moved on. Can't afford to do a BDA!

I found the second owner! Lives near Leeds, right age (55+) and initials...but ex directory.

4 letters are in the post, lets see if they hit the targets.
