the MkII BDA no's start with HRE, the NA is chassis build date code (July '73), not sure if Brian Hart built the Mk1 engines, the early ones came from Cosworth AFAIK, but if the later Mk1 engines came from BH then no it's not.
What's the engine code on the VIN, if it's L3 then it's a 16 X-flow i.e. Mex

only 50 were stamped with HRE, the rest were just year and number stamped

Need more info really. What other numbers are stamped in the head.
It has every chance that the engine number will be the same as the chassis number.
There will be a seperate number possibly starting WE
The chassis plates will confirm if the car is an RS1600 or not.
There is no such thing as an L3 engine code on a Mk1.

L5 is RS1600 L7 is Mexico
On the body colour tag
The model codes are:
C for RS1600's X for Mexico's
mark, were all RS1600s stamped with the chassis number on the head

what about the iron and alloy blocks any numbers on them denoting RS1600
Not that I'm aware of.
All the stamps were on the heads.
I know the early engines were built up at Weslake & Hart built some also.
These are usually identified by there WE or HE marks followed by a build number.
That is usually stamped a bit further along to the ford engine number.

Reason: spelling
No engiine and no plates. The car (a pile of bits) is a weird one - registered in 1973 in Leeds as an RS1600 with the above on the V5. In 1981 it had a 1600GT Crossflow fitted - I expect the BDA blew up or something like that. At the same time DVLA amended the V5 to read Escort Mexico which, as far as I'm aware, was never strictly possible. In '81 one of the owners applied for a V5 using the V62 form and wrote 'Escort Mexico'. This is when I think the 'swap' took place, a clerical **** up by DVLA.
I thought I had a Mexico - but I applied for all the previous keeper history and it turns out it started life as an RS1600. I've asked DVLA to amend the V5C so we'll see what occurs.
NEL was indeed a Bournmouth/Poole number. An 'NEL' Rallye Sport EScort would have come from F English in Poole.
