i must confess, ive been caught up in the "red mist" syndrome more than once, i have to agree with Neil, there is no point bleating about it, just dont get involved, theres been things that ive wanted but have backed away gracefully. Way of the world unfortunelty.

      A nutty price but.....

If you needed something similar for a Ford Mondeo today and the dealer charged £17.99 + VAT, you probably wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Considering these things are rare as rocking horse manure and 30 years old and getting rarer all the time, 7 times the price of something today which wouldn't phase you seems to be even reasonable.

Even if it cost £7,50 in 1980 and we take 7% per year increase it amounts to £50 !

I would like to know what car justifies spending that amount on, it's probably going on a non concourse motor.:knob:

Good on GMS for getting a good price.

Well done the buyer for being the winning bidder.

If someone wants to pay that much, then thats up to them. If someone got outbid then bid more next time.

If you want the item cheaper, look elsewhere and be prepared for a long wait.
I love this sort of comment, typical British attitude, you can't beat 'em so either join 'em or admit defeat. That's why there's no British industry anymore etc etc.

If you think this is going to help secure the future of this marque of vehicle, all I can say is I think you're mistaken.

It's not just expensive, it's ludicrous, this is the same phenomenon that we had at the end of the eighties when proper "classics" E-Types etc were fetching unbelievable money, if that's the way you want it to go then good luck.

If it's not "I've got to have it at any cost" it's "I'm gonna buy that to make a fortune on" which is great until no normal people can afford it anymore.

I've nothing against people making a few quid out of buying and selling parts but people just take liberties after a while, and you can't tell me that £310 for two rubber gaiters is justified especially as they're still available elsewhere?

I suppose people will argue that it's all fine, until they want summat

Thing you got to remember is the other guy was only a tenner behind him at £300, bet theres a few sets on there over the next couple of days. Got to give it to this site how many other people would have had a bid had it not been for Rimmer Bros, and the guys on here? Information is EVERYTHING or at least 300 notes difference.

So what do you propose we can do about it?

Possibly a national boycott of ebay for classic car enthusiasts

GET REAL - its market values, inflated, but there it is, it is worth that on the open market, live with it.

Someone was prepared to pay just over £300 and someone was prepared to pay a bit more and won it. Thats 2 people who want the same thing, both desperately by the looks of things. Lets hope GMS has a few in stock to ship out to 2nd chance bidders. Its business.

well the obvious answer is to offer stuff on sites like this and trade wanted bits for unwanted bits, if I came on here saying I wanted £350 for two handbrake gaiters you lot would quite rightly either ignore my offer or tell to f@@k off and not try rip youz all off, or do I see that wrongly

What about the seller who wants the best price for his item? I see it like this, he has 2 options.

                    1. stick it on here for £50
                    2. stick it on ebay and get £300

                    what would YOU do?

ergo you don't mind the prices as they are and think £310 is a suitable price for a pair of rubber gaiters, so if I come across some gutter trims maybe you'll be interested then, at shall we say £750

I never claimed it was a suitable price, it is the MARKET price.

Your welcome to ask £750 for gutter trims but I wouldnt be interested. I will wait until some come on ebay and I will have a bid. If I dont win I will keep waiting. Would be nice to find some reasonably priced, but if you read my first post you will see that you have to be patient.

I think this is whats ruining the classic car scene, it makes getting the car someway sorted out of the reach of the mere mortal, saying it business is a copout ,

and for the people with more money than sense the busniness/traders are rubbing their hands together, but are making it harder for the enthusiast

what happened before ebay, traders traded at a reasonable price, just look at the German market 2 years ago they where happy selling new wings for 180 Euro the Thick brits get involved and bid them £300 and next week another set is on, 7 inch wheel were 200 euro now the Germans put them straight on at £450 and dont worry about selling to their country folk as all the gifts are over in the UK

Guys, we could debate this till midnight and still be no further forward. The bottom line surely is. If you consider the item too expensive, walk away. If you consider it fair value, go for it, thats it. Full stop. I know that sounds a tad hard but thats life, My dipstick and tube was a prime example, from memory i think they were £155 and £145 but i wanted them, again as said before, someone had bid £140 and £150, so it just wasn,t me. Last week Garys made over £200 so.....Not really sure if there anythiing else to say on the matter. Theres very rarely any friends in business. I.d like to see someone on this board demonstrate its not about money and sell something at a 70,s price. Maybe gutterstrips at £30 a set or a mint set of Recaros at £120 a pair (as per the last known price list) no, i dont think so. Real world i,m afraid gentlemen.

Brian, I share your sentiment but sadly Topaz is right, it's the market and I don't think that anyone other than an enthusiast would pay over £300 for two rubber gaiters, it's just some enthusiasts have more money than sense.
