Glad you got your car fixed Kev , thats shocking work that was done , but to be fair the guy put his hands up and admitted he cut coners . If I were you I would,nt give him a penny after all the work carried out was not to the standard that you asked for so i would tell him that if he expects you to pay up to go and take a fly and jump as his work was SH!T..

I'm glad its sorted for now Kev, and you haven't lost your enthusiasm in your car, as you were a bit despondent on the night you found it all. (and who wouldn't?)
Glad there is good people around like Rodders who sorted it out for now, and I have to echo your comments on a great community being built on this BB.
As for the "mate" who done the botch job. You say he admitted the bad workmanship AFTER you had found the work and AFTER he had taken good money off you for a job he clearly cut corners on and ripped you off. If when you initially paid him, he explained he cut a few corners with his reasons and the job was temporary, give me part payment then he would have been trust worthy.
If you wasn't car literate and knew what you were looking for, that bad work would still be there now and he would have your full payment for the work done, with NOTHING said.
I'm sorry, but I wouldn't class him as a mate no more, he clearly tried to rip you off

I had my car restored three years ago, and my advice to you Kev and anyone considering a restoration, is what worked for me.

First I received a detailed written estimate of what I wanted doing (to include an ex factory/concours finish), so this could be followed during the course of the work. I also made several random visits to the workshop to see how things where going, if problems turned up the understanding was that he would consult me, and I would have the opportunity to advise on which way to go. The guy even offered and took digital pictures of each stage of the restoration and handed me the disc when finished. I could not have asked for any more, he was even an ex Ford Panel beater who knew first hand about factory finishes.........Hope this helps.
