I would argue that 18's and Mex's were special build, as they were built to order, as neither the 18 was built in sufficient no's as to warrant it's own "line" nor the Mex, as the Mex was only built for the UK (as far as I know)

Why the models were built in those batches so far apart is a mystery I suppose, but I think the assumption that as the 18 was basically a Mex wouldn't have interested that production planners at the factory.

The Engine number (not code) was that of the last two letters and numbers on the VIN surely?

Just looked at all the MK2 Mexicos that I have listed here and am quite surprised to see only 3 built in March, quiet month for the Saarlouis peeps.

Mine was registered for road 18th March 1977 (also my sons birthday)

With the day before stamped on the strut top (possible when dealer received?)

Sorry for being thick, so I take it then that your VIN consists of the usual front half and the BDA's special No. minus the HRE--- ones assumes standing for Hart Racing Engines?

HRE Hart and Holbay done these engines.

mine was number 24 of the 50 built with the steel crank etc.

77 was the year 1977

Heres mine in full Jamie GCATTM01503 thats it, then the HRE number on the block,
the non steel crank cars had 5 figured numbers on the engine mounting casting on the off side of the block, 75 or 76 depending on year then 3 more numbers.

all 18s were alloy block,

Mk1s had the engine number on the cylinder head i believe,

And as the 1800s were Mexicos originally you would think the chassis numbers I have for the Mexicos would be near to the ones of the 1800s that I have......wrong theyre miles apart...........strange
