I would argue that 18's and Mex's were special build, as they were built to order, as neither the 18 was built in sufficient no's as to warrant it's own "line" nor the Mex, as the Mex was only built for the UK (as far as I know)

Why the models were built in those batches so far apart is a mystery I suppose, but I think the assumption that as the 18 was basically a Mex wouldn't have interested that production planners at the factory.

BTW not wanting to question your knowledge just chucking my two penneth in

The Engine number (not code) was that of the last two letters and numbers on the VIN surely?

Mine was registered for road 18th March 1977 (also my sons birthday)

With the day before stamped on the strut top (possible when dealer received?)

the engine number is exactly that the last 5 numbers after the letters on the VIN,
the last two letters on the chassis denote year month,

But was it built in March?

I suppose not, is it an SU or SM?

Yeah I know Just wanted to be sure that what you meant, i.e. the number stamped into the block being the usual back half of the VIN no.

Couldn't conceive it being any different on an 18, but you never know

Sorry for being thick, so I take it then that your VIN consists of the usual front half and the BDA's special No. minus the HRE--- ones assumes standing for Hart Racing Engines?

HRE Hart and Holbay done these engines.

mine was number 24 of the 50 built with the steel crank etc.

                      77 was the year 1977

Heres mine in full Jamie GCATTM01503 thats it, then the HRE number on the block,
the non steel crank cars had 5 figured numbers on the engine mounting casting on the off side of the block, 75 or 76 depending on year then 3 more numbers.

Well, well; you get quite an education on 'ere innit guv?

All other models I know of had the same Eng No as the back half of the VIN, not so the "special" 18.

It doesn't surprise me, but it's very interesting

Anyone know if the Mk1's were the same?

I know the VIN's and build plates were even more chaotic than on the MKII, but it'd be interesting to know nonetheless.

Is your's a steel block then, difficult to see from pic

                        Cheers

                          all 18s were alloy block,

Mk1s had the engine number on the cylinder head i believe,

Just looked at all the MK2 Mexicos that I have listed here and am quite surprised to see only 3 built in March, quiet month for the Saarlouis peeps.

And as the 1800s were Mexicos originally you would think the chassis numbers I have for the Mexicos would be near to the ones of the 1800s that I have......wrong theyre miles apart...........strange

anybody got an RS2000 built in this month
Not this month but next. Mine will e 30 years old its a GCATTP (almost)
