Sounds to me that your pooter has been Hijacked you will have to remove what is doing it, to do this you will have to d/load and install Hijack this and run the proggy,it bringsg up lines of code with diffrrent proggys that are on your pooter from there it is posible to determin what cousre of action you need PLZ do not delte any of these lines if you are not 100% sure what you are doing
Personnally I alway run my Anti virus checker in safe mode with system restore turned off but to me it looks like its not a virus you have more like malware or scumware
ther are lots of cures to get rid of all of this so do not think that you hace to bin your pooter and buy another
If you are stuck and cannie get it fixed give me a pm and I can see what I can do for you

gotta dissagree with you there brian, i have good anti virus etc, but my virus i got a few months ago downloaded with microsoft updates, they knew it was in there, but there was nothing that could be done. i installed updates and BAM!! crappy wizard kept appearing on my desktop and saying 'pano stand alone' and my cpu usage went to 100%, i left it overnight once, came back the next morning ( some 7 hours later ) ant cpu usage was still 100%

when i went into the task manager, i fount the program was running within explore.exe so i couldnt delete it, as that is the spinal chord of windows. i had no option but to reformat my hard drive, luckily for me the previous week, i treated myself to an 120 gb external hard drive, and i copied all my photos to it, i am soooo glad i did, or i would have lost everything.

people backup your files on a regular basis or risk loosing anything important!

Blue screen, you still on Win 98, or ME? Not the best operating system, use NT 4.0 and above i.e XP.
Common mistake that many make is allowing downloads and new software to set a shortcut on the desktop, poor old PC tries to load 50 short cuts using it's 256 Mb memory starts to slow down.
Setting "System Restore Points" (XP) before installing software is very good as when de-installing the software doesn't remove itself properly and leaves the PC looking for software that's supposidly de-installed.

As said, always install a Firewall and anti-virus before going online and unless you spend all your time surfing dodgy sites and don't open attachments from unknown senders of email then you shouldn't get any trouble

Hi dave sorry I should have made my self a bit clearer
EXE, or executable, files are programs that do things on your computer. For example, game.exe may be a tank game. Files with different extensions, like .dll, are often support files for a program. Incidentally, .dll files contain lines of code that programmers make use of when making a program of their own - .dll files contain commonly used routines and code that all programmers user in their programs, making it possible for programmers to focus on the unique code for their program
so pics mp3s and video is ok other thoing like programmes and the such I would leave alone just to be safe
hope this helps if you need any more info just let me know and I`ll try to help as best as I can

                  Stevo

thanks for that, running windows xp and the fatal error did come up as you described, blue screen and puta shuts down to prevent damage.

                    thanks for your comments.

Graham hope you get your problem sorted sorry to jump in on the thread

Cheap option to get rid of something strange you have downloaded by accident is to go to:-

                          All Programs
                          Accessories
                          System Tools
                          System Restore

Pick a date Prior to the download and it should get rid. Has worked for me a couple of times.

Also Mozilla Firefox instead of Microsoft Explorer.
Its free and I've never had one pop up in three years.

still having hassle despite trying most of the above, howver it is better than it was.

to date, according to the spam mail/ pop up's, i have

                                Won four laptops.

                                won a cruise

                                joined 14 casino clubs

played numerous games and am the highest scorer and won another laptop

had 13 different companies sending me pop up's on how to stop pop ups

have become the 1,000,000 user to a certain site today and won another foookinglap top

                                joined 8 dating agencies

had 5 pop up's telling me i needed to subscribe to their firewall service Free of charge, only to go right to the end and find that it wasnt free at all

doing my head in on the quiet, but as i say, it has improved since yesterday,
