I'm not very good with these things, however i have a big problem that has happened over the last few days.

I keep getting the same 'pop up' from Casino's and also from an anti virus company, so much so that it is causing things to run slow, or not at all.

Also, my computer take's an age (up to an hour) to start up / progress through the start up period.

The little un and Wife are very good with these things, however even they are getting beaten

Anyone recommend a free (or one i can pay for) download that will stop these

i have the usual BT / Broadband protection, however i'm wondering if we / i have turned off a programme by mistake.

    thanks guys,

    download IE7 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

good pop up and script blocker built in, but if you PC is running slow its usually the build up of programs short cuts and file links, do you defragment ? when did the PC last have a clean install ?

very similar thing here Graham. Im pretty useless with these things as well.
The anti virus company said i needed updates etc every few minutes and i didnt click on anything to agree, as i knew i was covered etc. The puta took an age to boot up and in a lot of cases it just tripped out with a blue screen warning that something serious had happened.
in the end it was traced that the motherboard was infected. went out got another system.

Spot on Dave, every twenty ****ing seconds the thing pop's up even though i have a pop up stopper installed, trouble is it then slows everything down.

it's almost as if the anti virus / firewall thing is a virus in itself

Graham, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a similar thing happened to my work PC a few months ago, and it turned out that I had picked up a rather nasty virus....!! Pop up blocker would be coming up every 30 secs and it would keep taking me to a dubious looking anti-virus companies site (sorry can't remember the name). Everytime I went into my e-mail, it would run a scan, which would take longer and longer each time I went into it, eventually taking over half an hour to complete....

Eventually I got my computer boffin in to take a look, and turned out to be some virus that had only just appeared, and there wasn't any quick-fix software available to sort it....... I don't know exactly what he did, but it took him the best part of a day, to clear all the bugs out and re-install all my software, and his bill wasn't cheap!

Now this was several months ago and if it is the same virus, then hopefully there will be some de-bugging software available to sort it.....

Let me know how you get on.

            Neil.

Ive done 200 or 300 PC builds here and had no probs if you have a Firewall installed and anti virus BEFORE connecting it to the net and getting updates

                thanks Neil,
As with Dave robbo pop, this sound exactly what i have got, the info is being sent by a company called outerinfo and is beginning to seriously **** me off, hopefully someone on here can point to some software or similar

i have just 'Googled' outerinfo and there appear to be some downloads available to rid the world of this menace, however will have to wait for the Familly to arrive to download

Graham, if Brian's suggestions don't work (which i'm sure they will Brian !) i've just spoken to my computer boffin and he's just e-mailed this to me:

"Update you present virus catcher, if you don't have 1 then download AVG free from
                        http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
open it and upgrade it, if the trojan will not let you then download all the updates from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/24/lng/us/tpl/v5.
                        NEXT
                        from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
                        Download 4 things
                        Spybot - Search &Destroy 1.4
                        Detection updates
                        Tools update
                        Advanced check library
                        Install them,
delete all tempory internet files, cookies, etc disconnect the internet and run S&D and your virus checker and delete anything they find. if it says can it rerun at start then say yes restart and wait till its done.
rerun both till they come up clean. if they find something the second time write the name down.
DO NOT RECONNECT TO THE INTERNET as it will simply reload a new lot of virus's Send the found file names to me from another computer.
If they run clean you may have got away with it. try some normal things and see if you have probs.
upgrade both S&D and your virus checker and run again.
                        Also download ad-aware from
                        http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
and make sure you have a good firewall suggest zonealarm also free.
Do not pay for any of these tools, you can get to sites that will ask for cash... don't do it.
                        enjoy
                        bob"

Hope you get it sorted. Neil.

I would suggest that you (or the family) make backups of all the data and emails from the harddisk to another (portable) disk or burn it on a CD.

Yeah, go with avg. And it's free. Adaware lost a lot of street cred after it was caught out inflating it's stats to make it look better. I use Spybot S&D instead ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) instead.

If you've got a separate router box ( ie you connect through a network cable, not USB ), then just don't bother with a software firewall - they just get in the way and tend to screw up software installations. They'll never find you behind a router - well, not this week anyway
