Which TV???

For my birthday this year my lovely wife said she'll buy me a big TV Now, she has a budget of about £1300 ish. Which is better to go for?? Plasma or LCD. Am looking at between a 37" and 40" screen sizes. Anyone up on these things.

for that Budget the Toshiba 32-42 " WLT66's are great and have top marks awards too

and sound and vision are free delivery too, just got one of these for me ole man he loves it
has 2 HDMI inputs 2 scart and componant

While we,re on about Tellys can anyone tell me if its true about lcd tellys only lasting a couple of years Heard it from a few customers in that trade and they all recommended taking the 5 year extra cover,

I think Plasma TV's are "lifed"

ie, they are expected to last a minimum amaount of time and then anything else is a bonus

10,000 hours is the norm I think I read somewhere

So work out your useage from that

The "life" issue is correct.

I used to work in "Facilities" for a bank, they threw away 8 6'x2' Pioneer screens after 4 years use (they were on all the time)

i bought a plasma 3 years ago and took 3 year warranty, never had to use it, its great.

Bought 2 TV magazines today to do some "Research" They both say that the Plasma is still King but LCD is the daddy below 40". Wife went to Curry's this afternoon and the salesman said that Plasma's lasted around 55000 hours and LCD's 50000 hours. But she could be wrong

i always turn it off when not in use and only have it on for roughly 2hrs max a day, we dont watch a lot of tv, especially in summer

i have a panasonic viera plasma. top telly. had it about 2 1/2 yrs. looked at loads but the panasonic always came out tops in the reviews. got a dvd recorder thrown in with it too, with a big hard drive so no need for discs. very good equipment. bit more expensive than other brands, but you get what you pay for.

Good Plasmas are better than bad LCD's and vice versa. Very dependent on particular model. Only sure way is to watch them with a test programme in a shop. Consider even taking along your own DVD.

Typical weaknesses which sort out the wheat from the chaff are fast moving objects - especially a news ticker running across the screen. Also the usual old classic test picture lines and squares. Beware - if you watch a DVD some blurring of the fast moving action hero may come from the compression algorithm on the DVD!

Energy consumption can be a topic, but difficult to compare figures as this varies when set is in standby, cold, and warmed up. You might be surprised - those things can get pretty hot!

Don't worry about the colour etc., as any set should have adjustments for that to suit your taste anyway.

Dunno about UK, but over here, you shouldn't buy a set which isn't HDTV as that looks to be the next step in pictures.

I'd forget the Guarantee stuff. If it dips out in 3 - 4 years there's gonna be a new technology or whatever anyway and you're not gonna want your old set repaired. Wouldn't plump for a cheap ex-demonstrator model though!
