  • Mk2 RS2000

Hi, this is my Mk2 RS2000, ave only owned 19 months. Am 29 and i live on the wirral. Ive always wanted one because it was the only model my dad wishes he owned when he was younger.

I knew what model i wanted and i knew i wanted a project because i couldnt afford a finished car.

How it started, i seen the car advertised on ebay as a non runner, after afew phone calls and a 500 mile round trip it was home and ready for me to play.

here it is on its way home.

we had only got to the first services after picking the car up and i had about 5 people all round the car looking at it and asking questions about it and was it for sale lol

The advert was correct a solid rs2000 that would start but not tick over. The car had been welded, not the tidiest job but i knew i could sort that out.

once car was home i washed it

The lad that had owned the car before me had spent a lot of money on the car. Two days after collecting the car me and my grandad had it running and idling properly, we had found out that the cam timing was incorrect, so that was why the car would start but wouldn't run

The car was running a piper 285 cam. the engine felt strong but i wanted to buy a oil pressure gauge to find out how good the engine was. Plus the rs has a oil pressure gauge on the dials and that was running up and down

The engine spec was suppose to be 2.1 block, big valve head, ported, 285 piper cam, big bore manifold, 38 dgas carb.

I bought a safety device cage and magnum bucket seats to go in the car because of the roll tops being worn and these were a cheaper option at the time.

me trial fitting the cage before plates were welded to the floor to bolt cage too.

    cage painted white

I had the car booked in a local rolling road garage to get the carb set up so the day before i fitted a engine oil pressure gauge, the rs had a gauge on the rs clocks and it was never more than half way up the gauge. once the gauge was fitted the news wasn't good, the engine had low oil pressure from oil (30psi) and once oil was warm it dropped right off the scale on the gauge.

I took the car to the rolling road garage anyway because i didn't want to waste the fellas time i had waited over a month to get a time slot with him. The fella set up my single twin choke carb but said it was best to start sourcing bits to make a new engine up.

So the hunt was one for a 205 block, i wanted to bore the block out to 93mm to make a 2.1.

      Start of the big overhaul/resto

      head off

Nice little set up at my grandads house

      engine coming out

      ugly duckling

once the engine was out me and my granddad stripped the bottom end down to find the crank/big end bearings to be damaged, the block was suppose to be bored out to 2.1 eg 93mm it was the car only has 91mm pistons in it.

My new plan was to but some 93mm pistons, 205 block, get my head overhauled and get the porting checked by some one who knew what they were doing. I always wanted to keep a pinto in my rs.

i sourced some used 93mm pistons and they were in great condition

Darren from escort-tec sourced my a good crank and a 205 block both which had never had any work done to them

Why the engine was out i had the crazy idea to clean up engine bay and paint it. I had noticed there had been some repairs made that i wasn't happy with.

      THE RESTO BEGINS.

seamed and spot welded in once we worked out correct angle

      splash panel

      more rot cut out

      new panel welded in

      drip rail welded in
