  • Rapid Refresh Resto (RRR)

    Hi All

Well I've had RRR for a Year now which is like an eternity for me
After all the teething problems that I had last year..........

The Diff was very noisy & after numerous attempts to solve the problem inc ditching the Tran X Plate Diff & buying a new Quaife ATB Diff it turns out that it's the Casing So I purchased another Std RS2000 Casing & Run that for a while & all was well. It's off to Dave's (RS2000Custom) tomorrow to get the ATB Diff taken out of my Original Casing & Swapped into the 'new' casing.
So this will Finally solve the Main Problem

I had loads of problems with the Alternator as well............again not an easy fix as mine has been changed from the Standard V Belt system to a Geared Toothed Belt System. In the End I changed the RS 3 Bolt Bracket for a Gartrac 4 Bolt Item & the Metal Arm to a Nylon Arm which meant I needed a longer Belt. Anyway that's all sorted now, I hope!!

Every time it Rained Water came in through the Corners of the Windscreen. This is now fixed as I bought some of the 'non drying' Mastic & filled the Rubber Seals with it.

My Seat Back collapsed on me just as I arrived at Santa Pod so I had a very uncomfortable drive home But this was kindly fixed by Brian (WST Custom) on here who did a cracking job & it's been fine ever since

My Gearstick fell apart on the Lakes Tour & I had to drive the last 30 Miles with only 2nd Gear Luckily when I got back to the Heaves Hotel Escort Tec had some for sale After I managed to dig as many of the Bits out of the Gate as I could & someone, can't remember who sorry , threaded it on for me as I really didn't fancy tempting fate & cross threading it, with the mood I was in , all was OK.

I think the Problems arise from the fact that I'm the 3rd Owner to have the car since Paul built it & for two of them it was really an ornament, so to speak. So with me using it & putting on approx 3000 miles I found a lot of 'running in' teething problems but hopefully these are all sorted now

So RRR's gonna have the most changes done to it since it was built by Paul back in '08. Time to put my stamp on it

    Anyway to the Upgrades................
Car on Stands for the Diff Casing removing & taking out the Lowering Blocks, to be replaced by the Superflex Leaf Spring Pads

Type 9 5 Speed Gearbox awaiting a Final Degrease before Painting. This was purchased from Steven F

I've cleaned the Gate & fitted a New Saddle, this was minging lol

That's it for now. I'll post more in the next few days

Thats the problem with these old motors they always need money spending on them
Difficult roads often lead to beautiful places

You need the u type channel between the axle and the leaf to stop movement and it squishing down making the whole lot loose

Good luck with fitting the 5 speed,I`ve just fitted one to my RS2,it was the 3rd one i have fitted to an RS and was a complete ****,I didnt move the mountings back ,but fitted longer mount arms, you will have to open up the gearbox tunnel aperture, because you cannot get the gearbox at the right inclination if you dont. Also the rubber mount has to be lengthened because the tunnel has been opened up.Regards Gixer1000.

I've started hankering for a mk2 of late and this one is pretty much what would make my day - it looks perfect mate! Sorry to hear of your issues though.

Yeah even when you pay top end money for one they're certainly not without fault

Amazing what a bit of elbow grease can do Still needs another degrease yet though before Painting.

I pray that's it's a straight forward job but knowing my luck it probably won't be
I've bought the GS Escorts Type 9 Mounts so I'm hoping all will be well

I now wish i had drilled the spot welds out of the gearbox mounts and moved them back, but i wanted to try and keep a little originality,if i wanted to put the 4 speed back in.Are you going to take the engine out, then bolt it to it,then refit them together ?.Regards Gixer1000.

I have had a noisy Diff from Day 1 At 1st we thought it was the Tran X Plate LSD that was at fault but it appears that's how they are, noisy. So I bought a Quaife ATB LSD & it was very droney on the Motorway, to the point that it was giving me Car Sickness So we fitted all New Bearings & Crush Washer but it was still Noisy & it wore the Bearings out after a few miles So I bought a RS 2000 Diff & Casing from Escort Tec. Fitted this, without the LSD, and it's nice & quiet.
In Summary I put it down to the Crown Wheel & Pinion out of the Original Diff & the Diff Casing but I'm not willing to swap these items around so I've just fitted my Quaife LSD to the Escort Tec Casing & fingers crossed

Hi Dave, I've always loved the Car but it was a Right Pain last year with the Niggly Faults I still did approx 3000 Miles in it though
Lets hope with the Mods I'm doing now that this year will be trouble free

Thanks, looks can be deceiving lol
I think they ALL have issues & especially when they've being 'newly built' but not really 'run in'
I'm hoping this year will run a bit smoother than last year
