  • My MK2 Rebuild

Thought I would start a thread regarding my rebuild because no doubt I will need advice and help along the way!

This MK2 in question has been owned by my dad for many years now and originally started life as a 1.3L I believe.

Its been various colours and had various engines over the years but at the moment its a 2L pinto on 45's and I plan keeping it this way for now.

My dad had done a lot of work to it over the years also. Its been four linked with the box turrets, fully stripped and caged, some gussets (not sure on spelling) and some strengthening.

It has lay about now for the past 4-5 years from memory after the restoration got shelved due to personal reasons.

Its has had new floor pans and chassis legs, home made tubs and various other bits of rot removed and replaced.

It needs the front panel and wings fitted. New door skins put on. Dent in back quarter removed and the roof straightened. (was rolled at kames)

Anyway here are some pics of what I started with

The rest can be found here on dropbox

    Cheers

Its not to bad at all actually.

Will see shortly once its fully stripped and sand blasted!

Got a load of Ralloy bits through, cant wait to get them all fitted and start the slow process of putting everything back together!

          Roll Cage

Don't know if this is the best section to ask in but I'll give it a try

The current roll cage I have is a good few years old and we reckon its a safety devices one.

My slight dilemma is that it was in the car when it was rolled/flipped. There wasn't much damage or movement to the roof though. NSF corner is where it landed on.

My question is do I fit it back in or buy a new one? Will it still be strong? it looks straight and as it should. no kinks, bends, checks out it etc

If the answer is a new one, which one and from where?

              Mk 2 Build

Nice project for you to plod on with. Depending on the final outcome and use for the car, the subject of what type of cage to use can go on and on. I am currently getting the bits together to start the fabrication of my mk2 which will be used for stage events. I am thinking of prepping the shell to historic spec and I want to put the best, most substantial cage in possible to comply within the regs. I hope to start my prep thread soon, and look forward to keeping an eye on your progress with this build.

I've went with the safety devices 6 point bolt in cage which complies with historic spec.

The car will be mainly for fun, track days and auto tests to begin with and then hopefully onto single stage events - If I can ever pull the cash together!

If you haven't already came across it then this website is a good source for information http://www.hrct.co.uk/

Been away with work so no real progress to report yet! Hopefully next weekend will see it fully stripped as all that is left is box, shaft and rear axle from memory

                          Progress Update!!

Got the car back from being sand blasted and up on the spit

It then sat there for a few weeks (month or so really!) until last weekend when the diff tunnel was cut out and the bigger one put in place. It has been welded and roughly dressed on the underside and awaits me welding it inside to complete.

For my first attempt at cutting out, welding in, dressing etc I am fairly happy with the result.......just need to hope I improve for the rest of the car!

Slight progress over the holiday season - both diff and gearbox tunnels in place.

One slight school boy error though - anyone know the measurements to where to hole for the gear stick should be?!

Now to start from the back and work my way forward
