  • And so it begins. Aussie project

Well the project has started, even though after buying the car I promised I wouldn't start it until the new house was built & finished so I wouldn't have to transport it in bits to its new home. I sold our Discovery & the missis was happy if I got $5000 for it so lucky for me I sold it for $8500 & pocketed the difference (hope she isn't reading this)

Curiosity got the better of me so out came the seats & interior trim. Next a little poke about the rust blisters with a sanding disk (what harm can that do.........)

Before I knew it 2/3s of the passenger side are down to bare metal to remove all the filler in it. Whoever did the filler work was a master in this art but slightly stupid at the same time. The rear 1/4 was filled from a fin coat just after the arch to nearly 5mm thick buy the door shut. A simple adjustment of the lock catch on the door post pulled the door to the correct place & off came all the filler.

Look at the thickness of that........

Will probably change the wing at it has damage to the front. Will see if it will pull out with the slide hammer 1st though.

Some people should not be allowed to weld......!

    New inner splash guard required,

    Snotty floor patches.

Wouldn't want to trust this to much.......

    Interesting seat mounts.

So the parts ordering shall begin.

All in all the shell is in not bad nick compaired to the UK ones its just getting the parts in Western Australia that is the fun part.

Thanks pal. Just sorting out with SMCKA the wing & splash guard. Don't really want to start the fabrication work until its in the new garage as transporting the bare shell will be a bitch.

Not had much tome to work on the car but have still managed a bit. The pasanger side wing was in a mess after bare metaling it so off it came.

The inner splash guard is ok on this side just needs prep for paint. Shame about the other side......

There is nothing like buying the shiney bits to give you motivation. These however when held up to the car look a pig to get to look good!!!!!!

Need to tomorrow get the drivers side wing off as the splash guard on that side needs replacement. Put in a call to Steve at SMCKA performance, good news he has them in stock, bad news he sold the last left hand wing this week & the next shipment isnt untill June. Bugger!!!!!

Can't you repair the hole as does not seem that bad and given that the car will not see salted roads it should be ok?

Whats the plan for the car then seen as you have those nice alloy arches?

The RH splash guard is worse than the pix, it's split all the way up & to repair it I need to remove the wing so for the cost of that part which i can get I thought I would do it right.

I'm going to have some fun with the car will probably do the McRae Rally sprint series. I was looking at the WA gravel championships but now I've bought the arches it's not eligible. 10mm to wide on the rears.

The filler was a bit of a surprise as the car looked so straight so there is a fair bit more work than first thought. I've just got to decide how far to go with the mods & weather to change the engine type to zetec.

Now where is that rainbow as I could use the pot of gold at the end.....

After a violent struggle the drivers side wing finally released it's grip of the car......

Thanks. Starting to get the bits together. Sorting parts here, as Moose will tell you is hard, so always on the look out. Managed to pick up some more parts last night. Brand new 2.4 quick rack & a set of new changeable lamp headlights. Gary that sold me them has a fantastic original low mileage original paint MK1 RS2000.

Hi mate. Things have really taken a back seat at the moment on the escort as we have moved into the new house & need to ramp up the work on that, plus the escort shaped space in the garage is full of crap so its still in the unit for now . I'm still collecting bits for it though. Just need to find where they all are after the move.........
