  • 1300 Gut Launcher

Well after the birth of my baby boy and the missis deciding that a life of leisure was for her, the fleet has had to go.
The 4 door has gone to my old man. Managed to do a deal over the weekend on my RS minus the interior and some other bits I wanted to keep.
Estates for sale and despite no sniffs I'm still forever hopeful that will be moving on soon......Which leaves me with my lowly 1300GL. Work started on it with enthusiasm about 18 months ago....then my top welding buddy had to take on some other work...and interest was lost in it......it's spent the last 12months hanging in the rafters of my mate's workshop gathering rust....or dust.....or both.
But seen as I've got a small amount of cash left from the sale of all my wares and a garage full of Escort bits left it would be rude not to get the old gal back on the road.
To all intents and purposes it'll be a Replico...although not badged as such.....It's gonna be a heinz 57 of all I like about mk2 Escorts, not trying to be owt is isn't and people can either look at it and enjoy it......or knock it to their heart's content...my name's on the log book so I'll do what the hell I like!

Well here's some pics from the strip down, and the story so far....she was originally going to be red but I've decided to stick with yellow seen as my Estate will never make it onto the road under my ownership ......and I've already painted my engine yellow to match......

It will have a warm 205 block 2 litre pinto, bike carbs, type 9, billies on the front, Gaz adjustables on the back, for now a set of Alleycat Replicas seen as I already have them and don't want to spend any serious brass. Black Vinyl roof and be coated in a new coat or 2 of signal yellow. Then inside I will have my retrimmed RS interior.

The key word is Budget!! I've only sold the idea to the missis based on the fact I've argued that it won't cost me anything I'll just use the money from selling the other cars.....so it won't be a show stopper, just a nice useable classic I can go out and enjoy. I'll post some more pics when we get back into it.

It is surprisingly solid, rear arches are fresh as the day they left the showroom. All structural areas are solid. Can't wait to get one back on the road at last. Been forever.

looks like a decent project that one mate, its funny how a car like that has good rear arches and a bit ropey around heater bubble and ive got a good heater bubble and back arches have disappeared lol.
looking foward to watching this build and will be nice to see you making a car with all your favourite mk2 features rather than following the the usual trend.

Estate's the same, underneath it's solid as a rock to say it was stood in a farmyard for 10 years, heater bowl seems solid......but rust has eaten it's way through the roof on the rear corner......it's a convex surface.....how can water sit on there long enough for it to rot??????

This looks similar to one i am presently doing, the rear arches are really good but its also gone around the heater bubble, A posts, floors and door bottoms, mine also has a bit of chassis worm thrown into the mix.
Keep up the good work and before you know it you will have it back on the road, and the Mrs will be happy too lol.

If you want it, get it, before someone else beats you to it.

Can't beat a good spit roasting

Up on the spit now at my mates. He's finally talking me out of the Firbreglass bonnet as it seems a pig to line up properly, so on the lookout for a decent steel one.

Got one lousy bid on it after having 64 watchers!! Guy turned out it be a time waster who wanted me to get it rolling before he'd pick it up.... just don't have all the bits to do it.

A chap offered me 700 quid but I don't really want to let it I'm for that. I know you can't value it as the sum of it's parts but wings cost me 450 quid, doors another hundred quid, brand new rear shockers were nigh on a hundred so when you add it up he'd be getting the rest of the car for 50 quid!! Think unless someone comes along with the full grand I'll try and keep hold of it unless I'm desperate for the cash to get the gl back on the road.

Ps. Used to work with my Mississ til quite recently so she knows fully what I'm like.... you can't really have your pleasant persona infront of the Missis when you've got an office full of folk ready to grass u up!!

Bit more steady progress, few holes filled it, a few more cut out. Strengtheners gone into suspension turrets, just need grinding back and shaping as weren't finished off very well. Wing rails made and welded on. Lined up new bonnet and wings but wings won't be welded on still front panel's on and everything's been painted behind so it won't rot.

Play's stopped again as my mate's decided to knock his workshop down a build a new one.....godsend in a way as I'd rather have him paint it in a brand new custom build spray booth than a rusty, draughty old shed with chickens wandering about!!
