He started to tell me but i had to go as the place was about to shut.I really need to catch up with him and pick his brains.Having to spoken to him he really knows his stuff and does not just quote verbatim.

          • I have been rained off today so i thought i would investigate the cam timing!...So off with the radiator and timing cover etc..I checked and re-checked a couple of times and as far as i can seen the cam is timed in on the inlet at 103 degrees.I need to find a figure for the exhaust so i can check to see if the phase is correct. The front end has a duplex chain and a nice front pulley so thats good i reckon.
So with some time to spare i decided to pull the head and see what was going on in there. It is a 1600 and is on its first oversize. These are the pistons. Can anybody i.d these please?

            .
            .
I then took a look at the head. Now this really looks the part internally. It has been ported to a nice standard and has bronze guides. Here are some pics. Not the best but its hard to photo a port.

            A pic of the valves.

              • Nice looking head Adrian. The pistons look like standard bowl in piston, cast ones. The number on them looks like an AE/ Hepolite type number (20850) somebody with more knowledge than me will be able to tell you if they are 1300 or 1600 pistons by that number or by the size of the bowl in the piston, a 1300 will have a smaller bowl than a 1600.

Or even 20550. I notice in the Burton catalogue, there is a Nural (formerly AE) piston with a number 20552.

                  • The number is 20550 John.I am lead to believe that its a 1300 piston.

                    • Well now that the engine is out i have decided to pull the box out also as the speedo drive was not working.

                      I removed the bung...Damn!!
                      No drive fitted

I rang quaife-ex and they said that it would be a big/expensive job to modify my gearkit.

So i have bought one of these from rally design.
Its 80mm dia and should look ok with the jaeger rev meter that is fitted.
It has a hall effect sender that picks up from one of the disc mounting bolts.
                      • Electronic • Stepper motor movement • Microprocessor controlled • Crystal accuracy • User programmable (pulses per distance (miles/km) Electronic sender required please see part number SPM by searching in the `Quick Find ` box to the left or in the cat…

                      • Would be interested to see a pic of that set up when you get it fitted! Nice ports there to!!!

                        • I have been cleaning things up this afternoon and noticed some play in the input shaft on the gearbox..Sadly i am unable to ignore things like this and let them develop..so thats coming to bits as well.

                          • I thought these boxes were supposed to have play on the input shaft??? Or have I been told wrongly? Be nice to be all new either way

                            • I managed to get a new bearing for the gearbox from the local bearing factor for the princely sum of £7.20..Thats now fitted and the box built back up with new seals and gaskets.I hadn't planned to do this but glad i did as i now know it will be right.
On further investigation the spigot in the end of the crank consisted of a piece of bronze that was 4mm bigger in diameter than the input shaft of the box. This has probably not helped the situation.
I have a needle roller bearing type and have fitted that.
So the box is now ready to fit.

                              • So is the input shaft supposed to be tight in the box or should there be some play mate?
