    • I love what you've done with this car, just my cup of tea. Just seen some Super Oscars that seem reasonable if you're still looking that might finish it off nicely!

              • Thanks for the comments. The decals have transformed the look and have done a pretty good job of concealing the bodywork blemishes...I have just got back from holiday, so this week i will get stuck in again in the evenings.I need to finish painting the inside, on the floor and the cage.I have also bought a dymo tape gun today to label up the switches etc.

                • Looks mint now! Not checked up on it for a bit, decals make one hell of a difference!

I think all arched mk2 should be stickered up

                  • I have finally been able to finish the car and get some miles on it and iron out any problems.I went out last week in it and everything was fine for about 10 miles and then the brakes started to stick!!...Damn!!!..I tried to get it home but they were just locking on more!!..I waited about 20 minutes at the side of the road until they freed themselves off and managed to limp home just using the handbrake to stop.
The problem was two fold. The master cylinder plunger was sticking due to an accumulation of crap under the rubber gaitor. It was returning but very slowly and this was enough, along with the calipers sticking a little to allow the large build up of heat.
I stripped the master cylinder down and cleaned it thoroughly in brake fluid and it works fine now.
The calipers i started to mess with and decided to give up as the dust seals were torn and the pistons had quite a bit of corrosion on them so i decided to see if i could find some replacements.(they are 2.8 capri)
A call to my local parts factor turned up two beautiful fully reconditioned calipers for a 100 quid exchange..They look absolutely brand new,so its a no brainer really.Really chuffed, the brakes are pretty powerful now.
                    .
                    .
I then put a few miles on it.Although it seemed ok when cold the performance went off when warm to the point that it would barely pull away without big revs.I called at my mates garage while i was out and he had a look. The ignition timimg was 16 degrees. He did a compression check and it read around the 150 mark.So nothing really obvious but it just didn't seem right at all.
That night i decided to take a look as there was a little blow from the exhaust manifold to head.I sorted that and decided to check the tappets.
They were all at around 2 thou
I reset the tappets to 22 and 24 and then took it for a run...Much better!!..I returned home after about 20 miles and did another compression check..165 psi give or take 1 or 2 on all cylinders.
I am still a little disappointed with the performance though. The problem is that its an unknown and i don't know whats inside. It has a powerband between 2 and just over 6000 rpm so i don't think it has a very big cam..I was just expecting quite good acceleration and its not really.
It does 30mph at 2000rpm so its not over geared.
Any ideas would be appreciated..i just remember crossflows going better than this..or am i having a reality check?

Can you let me know how you get on at Minisport Adrian, I might take my RS down, the head arrived today so it's spanners out time. Minisport is a bit closer to me than Motoscope.
Gone to the Dark Side but still lurking!

                              • Well i took the Escort to minisport in padiham for its rolling road tune.
The guy who normally runs the dyno has been off work injured and has recently returned, his name is Rob.
I must say he really was a top bloke.Absolutely lives and breathes Escorts and was very, very knowledgable about them.He did comment that it was like putting on an old pair of slippers when he drove my car.He really did rave about it dynamically which i was really pleased with.He also raved about the works type exhaust manifold that is fitted.(i didnt have a clue!)
He asked about the engine and as its an unknown quanity he said he would whip off the rocker cover and check the valve lift and carry out a tune.
I left the car with them for the afternoon and picked it up at 6 pm.
He checked timing and jet sizes and synched the carbs, which incidentally has made such a difference to the engines smoothness at idle.I had put the vibration down to the world cup x member but it is pretty much as smooth as my mex now.
He checked the valve lift and reckons that it is a 234 cam fitted.
The car overall now pulls much more smoothly but there wasn't really much more power to be found at the top end.
He did say that he had in the past experienced problems with kent cams where the exhaust lobes had been ground about 8 degrees out of phase from where they should be compared to the inlets..?and this could be the problem of why this engine doesn't seem to pull like it should down to the cam timing. He also said that the compression at 175 is a little low and again this could be down to the phasing of the cam.Anyway at least i have had it tuned to the maximum of what i can with the engine in place.I think i need to pull the engine now and check the cam timing.
Overally i was very pleased with Rob and minisport and would definitely recommend his work to others...
                                Oh...heres the graph!..Watch out Gaz.lol!
