not much done today been busy rectifying some wiring on a series 1 rs turbo. Did manage to make a start on something thats been bugging me for ages, the previous owner started to cut the floor in the rear to fit 4link boxes, luckily the piece was still attached to the floor and even tho it was very bent and twisted it dollyed up ok and i tacked it all back in position

will need to finish welding fully then dress up with the power file and should be good as new again.

managed to a good gearbox tunnel,picked it up this morning off rstwo

everything i need to put mine back to standard. only got an hour in this afternoon so had a butchers at the dodgy passenger side sills, as promised some pics of how gash it all was


This is the lump that came out, 4 layers one on top of the other all of them rotten, glad i took the over sill off now, heres the piece i pulled out

didnt know how much i could cut out without it starting the give but at the moment its still strong enough. will leave this for mark and keep going at some of the smaller repairs if i get chance this week

I hope so and I think it needs to be, going to add some strengthening here and there just incase I win the lottery and buy a cossie lump. Hoping to have all the floor done by the weekend and get it on the spit, got a couple of gallon of underseal to clean off the underside!

Small Update

Little update, the floor fitting was held up as I got in touch with a real helpful chap that was cutting up a rotten mk2 and after speaking to him Wednesday I arranged to go up and cut the roof off the car this morning as my shell has been sunroofed. I couldn't believe how rotten the car was I opened the passenger door to cut roof of and the a pillar came with it


After a bit a sawing to remove the roof a jack had to be used to jack the centre tunnel up as it started to fold in half. Really helpful chap I must ad and after exchanging some beer token I left it looking like this

I pained me to cut this off a 2door but it really is too far gone and the bulkhead and what's left of the boot floor are going to be used to repair other shells so that made me feel better.

spent a couple more hours this afternoon removeing about 15 layers of paint from inside the car, found it would take to long to try and sand it off and to much effort so i used a heat gun and wire brush to take it back to etch. just have the boot floor to do now and the rear side of the tubs and the bonus was so far i havent found any rot i didnt know was there.

As id got this far i thought id investigate the 2 big ugly patches that were on the boot floor, as suspected and like all the other repairs ive found on this car they were huge patches covering small holes


just gashed them off quickly with grinder to see what was underneath, will have to let a little piece in here

and the other patch

to my amazement it was covering 4 8mm holes that have been drilled for something at some point in its life, will just mig these up and dress all welds up and it should be a nice solid boot floor then.

The use of the heat gun has softened the 5mm of black sticky underseal up on the underside of the car, has anybody got any good tips on how to remove this easily?

coming on a treat there easiest way to strip underseal off the underside of the car is a wire wheel that fits in your grinder its a bit of a beast though make sure you wear goggles and gloves done it with mine crappy job but worth it in the end fiddly bits just use heat gun ,if you get it blasted with sand or soda you will have it coming out for years to come inside etc

i tried a wire wheel just seams to make a sticky mess, its the shutz type sealer im trying to get off, i was wondering about soaking some old towels in thinners and lying them on the floors when the cars upside down on the spit?

little bit more done this evening got paint stripped off the boot floor and rears of tubs, not much inside left to bare metal now so il give it a quick scotch off and a thin wash coat of etch just to stop any flash rusting. i would have left this till after the welding was done but the fumes off the paint and underseal were horific!

another good shovel full of burnt off paint and underseal from the bootfloor alone

Yeah it was too far gone to do anything with, always a shame to see a dying 2 door but hopefully it will be reviving a couple of others
