Just trying to get it done asap on a budget so having to make parts rather than buying them. Getting there now tho not much awkward stuff left to make plus i now have the templates and tooling should anyone need any making.

Pretty happy with these and they are made from 1.5mm steel (thicker than the chassis legs lol)
Hopefully found a bootfloor so can get cracked on again and get the welding finished.
Wow well done on making these they look spot on.

        • While im waiting to hear back about a boot floor i started on the doors again and i opened my mouth too soon................

Skins past it on the bottom of this one, someones already been at it with the grinder and filler after the tin worm had its turn!

Probably Going to make a new section for the bottom of this one rather than buy a spurious door skin, cant imagine they would fit that well.

          • managed to get a little bit more done on that door today

Took the bootom part of the skin off to reveal a rotten frame bottom so fabbed a new section up on the folder and welded into frame

Also repaired the bottom corners as both were very rusty inside, there were no holes but it was only a matter of time!

Much stronger now. I then made a new repair section up for the skin and tacked into position. I had to try the door on the car before welding to check the gaps but one thing turned into another and thought nows probably a good time to get everything fitted up so dragged everything out and got this far

This is probably the most complete my cars looked for a long time and actually resembles a mk2 escort at last. Had to cable tie the pass door on as i couldnt find a spreader plate for the hinge nuts might have to make one tommorow.

Also gapped the boot lid up ready to fit the rear panel when its off the spit, i have now got a decent second hand rear panel and found a good bootfloor just need to pick it up.

              • Little bit more done today, fitted the doors properly and lined then up, found the door latches and rubbers so they are shutting nice but come across a little problem on the original sill lol

That will teach me to start welding things with no doors on! Time to get the big hammer and selection of bits of wood out i think.

                • hmmm, I had a similar problem with my new O/S sill Jon, It bellied out but I was aware of it before I fitted it to the car, the N/S one was spot on. Overall though your car is looking good all mocked up mate.

If you want it, get it, before someone else beats you to it.

                  • Yes to be honest all the other gaps are pretty good really, even the spurious wings are quite a good fit, however they are quite old possibly from the 90's so the toling probably wasnt as worn out then. Wont take much to get that sill looking right, i had a go at it before i left the garage but forgot to take a picture, glad i found it now as thats the door im working on now.

                    • I agree mate, deffo best to make sure everything lines up correctly before the paint goes on as its deffo too late then.

                        • Not much done tonight as my mind wasn't really on the job did manage to plug some of the old zebart holes up in various panels tho

But then i dropped a bollock and accidentally welded up the courtesy light switch hole lol

Like i say my mind wasnt really on the job so packed up and went home after that, il drill it out again some time soon.

                          • a few more bits now done, homemade spring skids now fitted

Then i went and picked my engine up from my friend graeme so i can get it sat in the hole to weld gearbox mounts in the correct place. Its not quite finished yet but not far off just the timing belt and a few ancillaries to fit.

I had to mock the carbs up just to see what they looked like, the inlet manifold still needs bead blasting as do the carb bodies once i have stripped and cleaned them.

Quite happy with how its looking.

                            • Got the engine and box in today and tacked the mounts in the correct place.

I had to tickle one part of the tunnel a bit to get some clearence on the bellhousing but other than that everything seems to be ok.
Then started to remove the old rear panel in preperation for the new bootfloor.

And had to try the donor rear panel on, seems to be fitting ok. Get the keys for new house on wednesday so work on the car might be slow over the next few months.
