Went to the TÜV yesterday to get the registration done as an historic vehicle. This is more like a scrutineering as all part numbers are checked, condition of vehicle , and also if everything is "period". You can fail if you have a mobile phone cradle for example, although a couple of exceptions are allowed.
Had to get the vented disc kit and the 69 litre tank entered into the car's papers too, and an emissions test.
Sailed through it without any fails - so it's off to the licensing authority on monday for my historic number plate.
Engine really needs setting up now. Bloody IDF's and their coughing and stalling - a nightmare.
I've set up and balanced the vacuum, think I'll continue with a colourtune idle mixture set up and then start the hunt for a rolling road with Weber expertise. Any DIY tips would be more than welcome!!!
If I recall, the timing plays a great role and I remember setting the timing on my old ones more by feeling than by the book figures and got much sweeter running. Interesting that Ford don't specify am idle ignition advance for the Group 1 engine - just 34° at 4500 r.p.m.
Do they check if the driver is "period" as well???
If you have the correct GP1 cam then set the timing at 36 degrees at 4500 rpm. On race-engines the timing is set always at high rpm not at idle because the mechanical dizzy's are not very accurate w.r.t. advance curve.
Make sure you have the F19 emulsion tubes in the IDF's; I have experienced that these can make alot of difference in how the engine runs.

F16 emulsion tubes are best on pintos we've noticed over the years and 36+ degress is too much timing i'm affraid . It won't gain any more power with the much advance normally so no point having it unless it's checked/proven on a rolling road or else the pistons may melt .

BTW, have you ever run a Pinto with IDF's and different tubes to cross-check?

We've had every type of pinto on every type of induction and F16's are normally the right size 99% of the time so a good starting place . Recently a certain rolling road has started slapping F7's in everything that goes on it's dyno . As everything then runs like an old sack of shite until 5000+ revs he blames it on the cam .
Some people like IDF's over DCOE's as they reckon the engine runs nicer but this is cobblers as an engine only sees air and fuel and it don't care where it comes from just as long as it's mixed right !!!!!!sigpic 2.1 ATMO YB POWER .

Took Jaffa out for the first time in earnest on Sunday and ......... Holy Mother is it FAST!
Can't really work out why, as it wasn't like it before I took it apart and I haven't really done much in the way of tuning although, writing this, I just remembered that I had the head done.
Spec is basically
Ford original Group 1 cam, valves and reworked head
2.1 litre with standard pistons
lightened flywheel
Group 1 44 IDF's
Group 1 cast manifold and full original Group 1 exhaust system
I can hardly get my foot off the accelerator in time to stop the rev needle going past 7000 rpm.
Car is running on the basic set-up to get it running after build.
We are talking here about a new BMW 335d moving out of the fast lane under acceleration to let me past! I suddenly remembered that I wanted to double check all suspension bolts before blasting it, so I backed off at 115 mph (German Autobahn!).
WTF have I done? Does the head rework add so much??? When this beast has been to a rolling road it's going to be untameable!
