  • Skids 2012 MK2 Clubman Rally Project Rebuild

Well 6 years after I started the last Rally Car Rebuild when I swore I would not do another I have bought another car which to be honest is mainly cosmetic and does not involve much welding repair other than outer rear arches and o/s outer sill repair .

The sudden and totally unexpected passing of a very close friend my Rally Mentor and a well known member of the original Yorkshire Rally Mafia prompted me into actually going out and competing again next year ,it will be 23 years since I last drove a car competatively so my expectations are not to high but I'm doing it for the craic and the **** taking as much as anything .

Well some pics before I started and the car spec as bought .
The electrics look are like they were done by David Blunkets dog
Unarched strengthened shell , 6 linked (watts linkage), turreted , Full SD multipoint cage, strut brace , fire wall , front & rear spoilers etc Very straight and honest little car .

    Engine
2.0 Litre 16V Ford Zetec engine . Twin 45 Weber's with KN filters,
    Weber/Alpha ECU
    headwork done, and mild cams,
Retro Ford water rail kit , Cert-met Competition clutch. RWD exh. in heat wrap. A modern Ford engine which goes very well and loads of torque

    Transmission
Tran-X 5 speed s/c c/r type 9 box , with single piece propshaft and RS Alloy bell housing. Disc braked rear strengthened axle with 4 link mounting and watts linkage on the rear , GP.4 turret rear shockers fitted with a 4.1 Tran-X LSD unit.

    Brakes & Suspension
Bias pedal box, hyd. hand brake , Princess 4 pot front calipers
    Drilled, grooved & vented discs.Rear
    XR3 calipers &
Vented discs. All lines inside. Bilstein front struts with RTM , WCXM , Quick rack , On car adj. TCA's , Coil over rear shockers with 6 link set up.

    Other
Centre fuel tank , twin Facet fuel pumps & filters . Boot mounted battery , Alloy sump guard , Big bore exh system. BDA big header rad with twin elec fans ,
Magnum seats,TRS aircraft release harnesses . Plumbed in & H/held Fire Extinguisher .foot rest,
    Polycarbonate windows. Laminated screen
    Fiberglass bonnet
    Long wheel studs ,

    OVERVIEW
This car has been sat in a dry garage and not used for 2 years, Needs small amount of cosmetic TLC but mechanically it is sound and the shell is very good. Could be arched to make clubman GP.4 car as its already 6 linked

More pics when I can get Photobucket to work ,axle is already out , all the interior , windows , fuel tank etc.

Getting a new Ralloy Tank this week and rewired dash ,heated screen etc. , will be finished with a full respray in white with Portugal 1979 Mikkola Blue stripes

That was a great reliable car when i had it - even with the dodgy wiring!

Have you sorted a photobucket account yet?

Some further Pics before I stripped it out

Axle is about ready to go back in , took Capri Tank out today after I had emptied it ( thought it did not have much in it and it had 9 Gallon in it )

Got weld in base for the Alloy Tank next and paint inside the boot .

Inside the car is done from a welding point or view ,had to put 4 plates on the inner sill , 2 each side ( after chopping put the rotte existing )

when the Tank is installed and the axle back in I will start on the electrics which although they work are not to a standard I like .I will post some more up to date pics when I have a bit of progress to show .

Yes it is still listed on his Site , you have to make a quick decision on these things
When you are taking things off you begin to think what have you started as it is getting further away from a runner ,but you need to look beyond the cosmetics , this car has a very strong shell in the right places , ok it has had some welding but the inner sills I had to repair were the original ones ,is registered as a 1600 sport and was originally dark green , however it will never be a show car again , it was bought to get out in the woods again ,which will be dependant on how much I have to spend on the refurbishment and improvements

Keep at it, as soon you get to the first corner it will all be worth it.I had a similar expericene to you, and that has got me back into rallying, unfortnally its in a 205 and not an escort but its only a matter of time before i get another escort

near morecambe,i used to do mainly local forest events, in the late 90's up until about 2001, in two mk1's and a mk2.i'm now doing road rallying in the 205, but it's only a matter of time before i head back to the forest.
