Hey Mark, it's really nice of you to ask. I've not posted anything recently since....well....there's not really any progress. I didn't really want to bore you all with exploits of my scraping marathon. I've been down the garage every night, freezing my nads off, persuading bits of stubborn tar and stonechip to give up the fight. The point I'm at now is that the underside is probably 98% done, and I've recently been scraping the bits of glue from inside the car, mainly where the sound deadening was under the rear seat and on the roof.
Here's three pics anyway just to show that I am still doing something...
Front inner wing / chassis rail, the repair bodge pretty much fell off... IMG_8577a by carlf18, on Flickr
On the bright side, I've revealed a fairly nice, original sill on the drivers side, much nicer than the multiple sills on the passenger side... IMG_8580a by carlf18, on Flickr
I made a 300 mile trip a couple of weeks back to pick up my MIG set, just need to find some cash from somewhere to buy some 0.6mm wire, some gas and a mask. Wish I wasn't so broke!
You`ve done a fantastic job there karl,
looking good and will only get better as you start to get new metal on. Keep up the good work and the pics coming
Fearing the worst I began a little exploratory scraping tonight and was relieved to reveal at least 50% solid metal. Hopefully I won't have to replace the whole front floor, might get away with the odd patch here and there...
Carl
You have a bloody good base there to work from ,the welding compared with alot of others will be quite minimal ,even Frosties has had more Mig on it
Me too am not bored with this thread
I will start my own next week as SAG is having a new set of wings fitted in a weeks time so the "blister " will be surgically removed
I will post pics for you and the other Bufties to pass comment
hey ur doing a grand job.
ur care looks strong compare to some.u will have this done the easy wae .
hope u get sorting out and do some welding u will get the hang of it.
keep the pics comeing will watch ur progress m8.
Still got the passenger side to do. This side has a few more traces of rust where the tunnel meets the bulkhead. I shall uncover more over the coming week.
Well done for sticking wih the scraping! First time Ive posted in ages just read through from p1. Definately a great car in the making! A word on your wings, if you can save them, save them the pattern rs ones just aren't worth the trouble. When I did mine i skipped a pair (!) because just the rails were a bit tatty and bought the express pattern ones. When I came to fit them they were awful, one longer than the other and the swage line was nowhere near matching on the cone! Ended up getting another set of s/h ones off RACE and rebuilt therails and fitted them, It now lines up a treat, but what an ordeal!!
For what its worth when you eventually start cutting, concentrate on one area at a time and weld up and dress fully before moving on to the next. Good Luck!!
Thanks for the info grs. I still have my wings but they are in a terrible state. Both of the rails are butchered and bent from getting them off, it had been repaired in the past so the simple spot welds had been replaced by hefty plug welds. I was wondering if it would be better to buy a set of repro wings and slice off the rails and cone cut-backs and transplant them across. I'd also need to swap the pillar joint piece. One of the wings needs a fair chunk of the arch fixing too. Oh well, I don't need to worry about these things yet, I'm probably 2 or 3 years off putting wings back on.
