Going back to Alex's original post we are refering to "low owner" cars that have actually had many owners who have not registered themselves on the log book to keep the previous owner count low !

All connected really as it turns out that Werthers has not been taxed since 1999 and no MOT info held by VOSA (so not MOT'd since at least 2002)

So whoever "sent off for the book" has looked at the registration somewhere then checked on the VOSA site and "assumed" the car is no longer around.

Alex's point was using his words "keep your house in order" and have it MOT'd Taxed if poss and insured so it appears on the MID - this way anyone checking out an I.D. can easily see it is out there.

Get your house in order , v5 in your name and car taxed or sorn and the new one I just found out by a letter from dvla , insured as I have some Vespas and lambrettas that I have in storage but got a letter from the insurance dat act about having uninsured vehicles .

It is a very simple process to obtain a V5 and that is why a chancer has tried to steal another... This time it has backfired!

Just be aware as if you decide to take a 3 week holiday you could come home to a letter saying that a person has applied for the V5 for your pride and joy and if you do not respond within 14 days of the date on the letter than it will be granted to the applicant.

This person has been on the DVLA website and been checking reg numbers, noticed it has not been taxed since the late 90's and thought... "That will be long gone by now,so I will have that logbook to sell!"

This probably works for them 90% of the time as the cars will be long dead etc but this time they picked the wrong one!

I am happy that it is actually getting acted upon and the applicant is now under investigation for theft/fraud!

Simple solution -

DVLA - change the way you conduct your business and make it harder for the criminals!

The Government agency - DVLA should put the onus on the applicant to provide sufficient information to prove ownership of the vehicle before they consider issuing the document.

It is far too easy to obtain information and documents from them.

Only my opinion, don't want a slanging match.

Yep my bad , I found a "back in the day" pic on Facebook of a car somebody used to own so posted the pic on there for them to see.

Thanks for all the input on the thread and I am considering the idea of m.o.t and tax etc or sorn so it will make it look alive so as people do not try to steal the ID again! Good advice thanks chaps.

I am glad this thread has brought so much attention as anyone in our position who has a car laid up in storage should now think if it has not been on the road for along time the. It's worth m.o.t and tax just to keep the DVLA record looking active so the low life free loading thieves stay clear of your ID!

Well i wont be sending mine for an MOT or paying to tax it just to stop some thief / car ringer

All i would do is let them apply for the logbook , wait 3 months then report it to the police , that way it will be easy to find out who has tried to be a car ringer

Cant SORN one of mine due to it being off the road since 1995. When i bought the car in 2009, i filled out the SORN but it still shows as unlicenced. Not a lot i can do about it. DVLA dont seem to have the ability to tick the box on there system as sorned.

A slight worry would be if you've had a car off the road for a long time and have moved address a few times. Harder for the DVLA to find you and easier for some unscrupulous thief to try and pinch the cars Identity and ring your car

Surely this must apply to a very small number of cars by now Martin. I've never been able to understand, that since the introduction of SORN, that DVLA don't just cancel log books for vehicles that aren't registered or declared SORN and put the onus on the minority to prove the provenance of what they have.
