    They dont !!!

They stay attached to the x-member.

If you want to remove x-member - its easy away from the car.

Well ive started taking the engine out today got most of the ancillaries out of the way , so im nearly ready to drop the engine .

Just a couple of things first though , my car is fitted with twin 48 dellorto carbs and look as though they will not clear the battery tray when i come to lower the engine , is the only way around this taking off the inlet manifold?

Also do i just lower it down and pull it out on the trolley jack ? or do you lot use a crane and lower it onto a dolly?

            thanks for all the help

You should really take the carbs off. It's only another 6 bolts to drop the inlet manifold and carbs away.

I always use a trolley jack under the X-member and a dolly on the tail of the gearbox. If I'm lucky the missus will come and hold things steady whilst I wheel it out. You can just as easily use a crane though I guess.

                      Gaz W,
I know the trouble your going thru. I had to change the clutch in my RS2 last year by my self. Only had a lifting crane for company. What these blokes are telling you is an easy way of doing it, but I had to do the clutch twice in two days! Make sure you align the clutch plate before the gearbox goes back in. I had to do it the hard way by seperating the engine and gearbox to lift them out, then had them together as one to go back in. Fun stuff!
Enjoy the work, it will be worth it.
                      CheeRS,
