  • Damn SORN!!!!!!!!

I is really not a happy bunny! :boom: Just got home from work today to find a letter from the DVLC on my doorstep wanting £25 "fine" for me not declaring my Mex as SORN. In the past I've just kept her locked up in my garage over the winter and re-taxed her come the Spring. Never had any problems before Untill now! Is there any way I can plead ignorance and get let off the fine????? Anyone else out there had such experiences with this? Yours, A very disgruntled Frosticles!

I completed a SORN for SKC and I still got a friendly £25.00 "fine".

I sent in screen prints off web pages (showing date and time etc) from my rebuild and they sent a letter saying they would NOT be pursuing the £25.00 but to let them know as soon as car finished.

Kevin, don't think you have anywhere to go on this, the tax reminder would have stated that declaration of SORN was required if you did not intend to renew the tax continuity.

At the present time if you buy an untaxed vehicle you don't have to declare SORN, but from January the DVLA will be empowered to seek out untaxed vehicles from their records, regardless of whether or not they are being used on a public road - the introduction of SORN was the start of this thickening wedge, predominantly aimed against motorists who are uninsured and thus unable to obtain road tax.

      Regards,

More laws like SORN are needed - I see too many victims of accidents that have to claim against their own insurance becase the driver of the other vehicle has no insurance - regardless of blame !!

oops, apology time. I've just checked DVLA leaflet INS11 (the one that accompanies the tax reminder but never gets read) which states that the new keeper of an unlicenced vehicle must declare SORN if he/she does not relicence it
Kevin, I think you have probably saved me a £25.00 fine, thanks very much !

Got away with the fine. Told them I had posted the form off when I received it. Bit lucky there I think but worth writing to them.

Just be thankful we dont have to pay an admin fee for sorn - because that was the original proposal! One way of avoiding forgetting is to realign your daily-driven cars tax expiry to the same month your RS or whatever is routinely taken off the road. Then both reminders come together and you can hand in the sorn at the same time you renew the tax on your ordinary road car
