Have to admit we were in Holland 99 / 00 eve and it sounded more like Beirut than anywhere in Europe LOL! Some of those 'fireworks' towards the end were more like plain straight explosives - Hmmmm - control would seem to be a reasonable reaction! Happy New Year.........if you survived!

        German New Year

In Germany there are two traditions:

1: This play seems slightly odd to your average Brit, especially when you get asked why you have a blank face and if you have seen it (if not, why not).

The English film you've never seen - but Germans watch it adoringly every New Year's Eve.

2: There is also, like in Holland, a ban on fireworks all year long and for a few days before New Year's Eve, shops spring up and start selling fireworks over the counter, but as Berlin is so close to Poland many drive to Poland and buy up car loads of cheap (dangerous) Chinese (market) fireworks.

That is the reason I head back to the UK between christmas and new year, to avoid the bleedin row and the banger throwing idiots, although I did, only once, thank gawd, see something approaching Dutch standards here in Berlin
