  • Cars you should have bought but didn't?

There's at least three cars that I kicked myself for not buying over the last 30 odd years.
Rs1800 from Aberdeen that I went to view that had been re shelled with a red mexico for sale £4,000
Dtv 555v signal red rs2000 I chased that car for years
And a yellow rs2000 near Glasgow that I walked away from because of a tight clutch cable, was mint and by the time I returned from viewing a heap it was sold

Yep I've got a some that spring to mind! RS1800 for sale in Caernarvon during the late 70's. They were asking around £3,500 for it, a bit less than I paid for my RS2000, but it sounded modded having twin carbs on it. I thought my mint RS2000 was a better car all around and a more economical car to maintain! My biggest regret was not buying a Mk1 Lotus Cortina during that time as the asking prices were hovering around £450, some were showing signs of rot and nobody wanted them! In the late 70's the ex "Professionals" car PNO672R was for sale in Norwich and I seriously considered going over there to buy it, trading in my mint yellow Mk2 RS2000, but I considered the car did not look right and all the harsh treatment that it had during the filming, so I decided to leave it were it was! Other cars I would like to have saved were my dad's 1961 Mk2 Jaguar, his very early 69 Capri 1300L, 71 Cortina 1600GXL, and his 74 Cortina 2000E.

It's ok looking back what we should have done, but at that time we thought it was right, besides wherever would I have kept them all!

RS1800 about 1989 in Blackpool from a well known concourser , it was rotten and really needed a shell ....£3500

One owner from new MK1 RS2000 , still had plastic on the back seat, only 20 minutes from home, around 1990, think the old guy wanted £1850, had my MK2 in bits at the time and couldn't get the cash together, he traded it in to Ford main dealer !!

White MK1 RS2000, 5 miles from home, had new inners, outers, rear panel, all the trim was bagged and mint, alloys, full custom pack, ready for paint ...£200, yes two hundred , walked away from it and told my mate to go and buy it, he did.

Olympic blue MK1 RS2000, just up the road, needed two front floor pans, £200, walked away from it.

One owner from new MK2 Mexico, yellow at Preston, £2000

      Capri 3100RS, £1250

When I think back there were dozens, we were travelling every other week viewing cars out of the Autotrader, loads to choose from, bring back the 1980's 😩

Around 2003 an immaculate 1975 N reg MKII Escort Base (saloon) was for sale this was the original bottom of the range model before the Popular/Popular Plus came out in July 75 as a replacement. It was a 4 door 1300 automatic in Miami Blue (metallic) with the Light Marquis trim. A very rare model in an unusual spec and colours. It was completely original and immaculate also I think came with a near full MOT, it was £500 and in London (the distance put me off). I often wonder what happened to it, if one like that appears it must be the same one as it’s so rare. If it does turn up still in original condition i'd probably try and buy it.

The ‘How Many Left’ website list that one 1975 Escort 1300 Base Auto survives on SORN could that be the one???

Missed out on buying a tidy rs 1800 with arches, nice at that time but at a price tag of £4000 30 years back which was slightly out of my reach. Was up for sale at Ivan wilson's the saab dealer. Should have purchased a mk1 rs 2000, silver with blue strip, 4 cibies but me boss put me off buying at he thought too expensive at £1600 lol. Car went to England. Should have also bought a terracotta mk rs. Lovely genuine car. COH 12 was the personal reg on it. Doc will mind it well. Also bought a few i shouldn't have too lol
