A very sad weekend for the rally. A driver, Chris Lawson, died of a heart attack just before the rally while doing his notes. The organisers left his start number, 130, empty as a mark of respect.

On the rally's second leg, John MacCrone, driving a Subaru Impreza, crashed off the road on stage seven, Loch Kinloch. The rally was immediately stopped to allow the various emergency services to attend the scene quickly. Sadly the co-driver, Andy Mort succumbed to his injuries. John was airlifted to Glasgow hospital with back injuries.

I was doing radio on the stages after the incident, and we were all stunned when we heard what was happening. Our rescue crews and doctors were busily on their radios/phones offering help and assistance, and when the rally was declared abandoned, they all proceeded to the scene to help and assist with the recovery.

The island is a very close-knit community, everyone knows everyone! It has been a terrible shock to the whole island. Happily John is now back at home recovering with his family, his injuries were not as bad as thought.

Our thoughts must be with the families and friends of the deceased and injured, and of course to the island.

That is sad, big blow for all involved and motorsport.

Sadly there appears to be more co-driver than driver fatalities over the past few years. Hope there is not a common safety design issue with seats or cages or something that is being overlooked. Maybe the steering wheel just gives the driver more stability?
