Silver on Black number plates

New DVLA rules mean they will be permissible on Historics as of next year and will be as tax - rolling basis year on year!

This .gov document was updated in Oct 2014 and is still states upto 1973 for Black / Silver

Thanks but that isnt an official .gov website - I have looked and cant find anything regarding "historic" number plates changes on DVLA DVSA or VOSA

I am an MOT tester and we have not been informed of any changes in the current number plate legislation so as far as UK MOT's are concerned its still Pre-73 only

What we are forgetting is that silver and black plates were not fitted on cars later than 1973, so on anything later than that is going to look odd, out of place, and not very authentic in my view! Of course I respect that it is up to the owner to choose what he or she likes, but for me it has to look original and exactly how they were when they were new! When the reflective plates were introduced they made the black and silver look dull and very outdated, so many owners of older cars replaced their old plates for the new reflective ones! The motor trade would also carry out a similar practice when selling used cars to make them more appealing to sell to thier customers!

Did we ever get to the bottom of this ? because as Dave rightly said way back on this thread If it's after 1973 it's going to fail a MOT with black plates
And fail one I did today (after checking the manual again to be sure)
The guy who brought it in for test even knew it was a fail having a correct pair in the boot which he held on with 2 elastic bands over the top of his black ones whist I conducted the test
Was quite a nice Dolly sprint too

Did you change the Dolly's head gasket as well Paul, before it went home or did the owner feel lucky and take a chance......? My mate had one back in the early 90's as his dad had a Triumph dealer in Enfield in the 70's and it blew up and he sold it, then re-lived his youth a few years ago and got another one and it did the same He sold that too and as never said they were better than a RS ever again !!!

Back on topic, regardless of the legatees of black/white plates on anything other than a car that would have had them from new on a model run they look a bit 'scene' like pressed German font on VW's and Japanese script on JDM cars.

My 'pet' Bedford TK horsebox has black/white plates that I fitted replacing more modern ones, but it was built in '67 and looks much better with them and completes the look. Only thing is I have to wash the horse **** off of them incase they rot
