Anybody had any dealings with these deals where the dealer retains the V5 documents on a new vehicle?

v5 retention on new car purchase

Bought my last car from these: http://www.new-car-discount.com/
They kept my V5 for the first 6 months as they were the first registered keeper, so when I got the v5 I was the second owner. But they saved me a load of cash a they beat any dealers price by a long way.
Didn't have any problem once I got my head arounf it.

a friend is the process of buy a new van, got a good price from one of these websites, paid deposit then after asking a direct question was told the dealership would be keeping the v5 for 6 months, they werent very upfront about it, only after he specifically asked about the registration documents was he told. asked me to find out if it was a con, all sounds a bit iffy some sort of scam buying cars on fleet discount as rentals/demos and then making sure they dont hit market at fleet prices and or making it look like its a dealership demo vehicle incase the manufacturer checks up on them. Seems they maybe issues with insurance, as although you are supposed to be the owner ( you have a receipt ) and have possession of the car you are not the registered keeper. I'm sure its a loop hole that will eventually get closed down but just wondered if anyone who works in the industry had experience of it as its made him understandably worried about something which seems a bit dodgy going on with such a big purchase
