Im looking at a mk1 escort on Saturday that was registered on the 1st January 1974, obviously the tax exempt date is manufactured prior to the 1st January 1974, but whats the chances it was made before 1st jan 1974.

No Doubt at all the car manufacture date is prior to 1 Jan!, Bet you still have to go through the ballache of proving that though!
Mine was registered mid January 74 but built in sept 73. It goes off the manufacture date not the registration date. You need a letter to prove the manufacture date from a club or manufacturer. All the info is on the DVLA website or used to be.
I thought the new criteria were cars had to be 40yrs old for free tax. It's been registered for nearly 41 years so you can't have any problems.
lees right it changed this year to a 40 year old rolling date system so I've only got 2 years to go till my 1976 R reg is free ? Might take 2 years tho
I did mine this year registered April 74 built November 73,sent all info to dvla they did not believe me ,had to get a letter from ford ,it all took ages they must only work ½ day a week.
From the 1 April 2014, vehicles manufactured in 1973 will be added to the exemption for this category.
From the 1 April 2015, vehicles constructed 40 years ago will be added to the scope of the exemption.
So if your car was built in 1974 it will become eligible from 01st April 2015.
