So, It is saying that the early MK2 Escort will be tax free next year. Surely it will become tax free in 2016? My MK1 is March 1974 but have to pay this years tax. Come Next year (2015) it will be liable for free tax as is a pre 1975. So, the first MK2 came out in 1975 so that would make 2016 the year that the MK2 becomes tax free (Pre 1976)

Is yours a 76 then? If so, it won't be 2 years, it will be 3 before you will have free tax

Don't hold your breathe guys, just remember that the last Conservative Government started the 25 year rolling thing, then Labour got back in and knocked it on the head. Now this Conservative Government have started it rolling again - no guesses what will happen when people decide to vote Labour back in.

Yes governments are so volitile, and things could change back within a very short time, so who knows?

Good news on one hand 2.153, then takes it away with 2.152 on your daily runners

2.152 Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates and bands – VED rates for cars, motorcycles and the
main rates for vans will increase by RPI from 1 April 2014. (Finance Bill 2014)
2.153 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The government will introduce a rolling 40 year VED
exemption for classic vehicles from 1 April 2014. (Finance Bill 2014 and future Finance Bills) (39)
2.154 VED administrative simplification – As announced at Autumn Statement 2013, the
government will introduce legislation to reduce tax administration costs and burdens by making
the following changes with effect from 1 October 2014:
•• motorists will be able to pay their VED by direct debit annually, biannually or monthly, should
they wish to do so. A 5% surcharge will apply to biannual and monthly payments (Finance
                    Bill 2014) (c)
•• a paper tax disc will no longer be issued and required to be displayed on a vehicle
                    windscreen (Finance Bill 2014)

So, does this mean if my car was built & registered March 1974 then it will be tax exempt this year????????? My understanding is that it will qualify next year.

I was thinking this and nearly wrote a post thinking the same thing. Rereading the proposed bill, sadly it seems you'll have to cough up this year and it will be Historic tax from 1st April 2015 as its Pre'75 as the cut off date is still 1st Jan each year.

If you was to have taxed it from the the 1st March this year you will have to pay tax for 12 months tax as it will become Historic tax class from April 2015. So even though it qualifies being built in '74 the system lags behind. It would be 15 months if a car was built on the 1st Jan'74.

Here is a link to the Government page, rather than some random classic car site page .

My Mk2 was built April 76, but being a import I don't know when it will become exempt. But I can understand the 40 years rather than the 25 rolling limit. My daily driver Sierra estate is 24 years old, although it would be nice.

That is exactly why I hated Gordon Brown from 1997
