        Hi There

According to the DVLA you can do it at the Post Office by changing the tax class on your V5C (section 7) signing section 8 and Tax it from the 01/04/14, assuming its just become eligible due to the move of date announced at the last budget.

        Regards

Here is the response I got from the DVLA as mine was registered in Jan 74 but manufactured in 1973.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in his 2013 Budget speech an extension to the qualifying criteria for the Historic tax class.
With effect from 1 April 2014 the cut off date for VED exemption for classic vehicles of 1st January 1973 will be extended by one year to 1 January 1974.
To tax a vehicle for the first time in the historic tax class, applications will need to be made by post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DZ.

                Documentation required for registration :

                • V5C registration certificate
                • Dating evidence. (This can be obtained from a vehicles enthusiasts club or from the manufacturer.)
                • V10
                • Insurance certificate
                • MOT certificate.

You will receive a tax disc within 2 weeks.

An amended V5C reflecting the change of tax class will be received within 4 weeks.

A Refund of any months remaining on paid tax discs can be applied for using application form V14 which is available from www.gov.uk/dvlaforms

                    Hi There

I got a different response when I phoned the DVLA last week in that it can be done at a post office. I am going to try this on the 01/04/14.

                    Regards

The dvla are a pain in the arse, the email response is just an automated message, ive had the same reply word for word a number of times.
On the 1st of March I posted my v5 and related information asking to change my v5 in readiness and they wont do a thing till april, so I have to tax mine, then send off my v5 and then claim back my remaining tax

Exactly like this, change taxation class to "Historic" in section 7, sign and date in bottom left corner of section 8 and go into Post Office on the 1st April. They'll give you a free disc and send your V5 away to be changed. If you have current paid for tax that runs beyond 31st March you can get a pro-rata refund using form V14 but it must be in the post before the end of the month.

What date is on your v5? If its a 74 date you might not be able to do it at the post office
