I translate "Lastenhefte" = Requirement Specifications for Daimler (Mercedes) and everything is documented in there I can tell you, nothing is left to chance.
If Ford is still making cars that rust, it's due to the spec and skimping when painting, zinc coating and the quality of steel used.
What I'm saying is that it is part of the engineering process, find out what you can get away with and then skimp some. The last Lastenheft I did was for intercooler/turbo-inlet hoses and Daimler specifiy for the BR205 that these should last the lifetime of the car. Also contained in the LH was that the supplier is oblidged to suggest cheaper materials for the job as part of the engineering process. In another document Daimler specced a wire to the air suspension from 0.16 mm to 0.06 mm. The first cars built in a model series are always the strongest.

I can't fault my 10 year old Mondeo for rust it's very good, but they have skimped on the unplated bolts and screws under the bonnet which started rusting after 6 months, which is annoying!
