It is a good number, but I wouldnt want to be spending that sort of money (and i'm sure it'll do much more than reserve) and then have to miss space it..

In Germany it costs you 15 euros to get the plate you want. Mind you, you don't "own" the reg mark.

So long as you keep paying the retention fee it is yours to buy and sell.

In Germany you cannot sell them on
                Cheers

That is correct, if the DVLA so wished they could claim back any numbers or disband the entire system as I believe France did some years back.

Surely this wouldn't happen without compensation to plate owners.

Also the DVLA make millions each year selling new plates and also listing previously unused plates in their auctions.
                        Cheers

yes they make millions but they dont really sell them as you cant own them you are paying dvla a rent for you to display them on your car or to have them on retention very clever really as they can never loose or be ripped off

In Queensland once you have paid for your number plate it's yours for life even if you don't have a car to put it on.

Which does come as a shock to folk who have a private plate, then illegally space it out to read something that takes a genius to work out. You only need to be done twice and DVLA can rightly claim the number back.
