  • Importing?

    Hi all

Not sure if this warrants a technical query but I'll post it here first? I have been considering buying a rolling shell from a boy in Spain and he is prepared to sort out the shipping to somewhere near Middlesbrough and all I would have to do is collect from there but what I need to know is would I have to pay anything when it lands here ie import tax etc as I know South African cars need import tax but as Spain is in Europe, and it's only a rolling shell I am a bit unsure?

I'm pretty confident on trusting the boy he has quite a comprehensive website etc so that's not a problem hope somebody can answer for me.

    Cheers Neil

I agree, I would like to see the vehicle before buying, no matter how reputable the company, if nothing else, simply to check the condition for myself. I take it you've googled the address (Google Earth/Maps to view the premises) and the name of the company.
As said, if they're near a city in Spain it'll be a cheap flight over, a lot cheaper than getting a nasty surprise.
As regards taxes, you shouldn't need to pay import duty on it. For new vehicles you can even choose where you want to pay the VAT, i.e. where the lower tax regime is. As far as I'm aware, no EU government levies VAT on used private vehicles.

Yes I've googled it all it seems fine and I've had 49 photos of the shell and tbh I don't think there'll be any nasty surprises I know it's a risk but it's a damn site cheaper than the same shell over here

Viewed my Roth rep donor car with only photos and paid for it before it was shipped to me as it came from Queensland (approximate distance by road 4500km's) Was a big risk and it arrived with no nasty surprises BUT if I was to do it again I'd try to get a viewing done.

A few years ago this kind off thing happening a lot, people sending money abroad for vehicles, expecting a vehicle to either be waiting for them, or arriving back in the uk,
This made headline news, and even some investigater reporter programmes being made, once your money is gone, it's gone, the item doesn't look cheaper than uk items then.
We are all looking for bargains abroad, which makes us targets, for the criminal element, buyer beware.
It's a risk ...a risk I wouldn't take, I'd go and see the shell, see it on the transporter, and then pay. With a bit of planning this all could be done in a morning.
The seller would fully understand if he has anything decent about him.

It's a tricky one for sure as reputable companies will get tarred with the same brush as the scammers . Maybe you can pay up front for the shipping and then the rest once the shell turns up or pay direct bank transfer once the shell's on the ship and confirmed by the shipping company . Worth asking .

so you can then collect the car and not send the money ,,

                      same risk for the seller

would you ship a car overseas without being paid for it ?

as said above, you can get a cheap flight over there and then see the car in question ect....

however if you are happy to take the risk then that's up to you.

I agree with Paul, there is no chance of anyone shipping off a car to another country with out being paid for it first!! If you are happy in yourself that you have done your home work and everything is all above board etc then get it bought! you may be able to take out some insurance that covers you in case the car did not arrive! if the car is what you want and you are happy with the situation them go for it! Good luck.
