    After reading seanmcc's for sale advert, where he said he's selling it to buy 'the ultimate Escort' - RS1800 maybe? It got me thinking.....

    What's yours?

    I'll start if off with a few of my thoughts. Trying to decide on one car is never going to be possible but in a bit of an order:

    My '68 Twincam must be number one, I've owned it for about 13 years never driven it and it's just getting rebuilt as we speak all to fairly standard spec of course. I owned lots back in the 80's so really looking forward to being back in a genuine one next year.... I hope!

    The RS1800 is probably the obvious choice, but then a Rothmans Mk2 replica (due to it being sensible money and useable) with a sorted pinto really floats my boat. Without four links so it still has the rear seats.

    I like that the modified/ replica scene has taken off, when I was originally into escorts in the 80's everything was about genuine cars and replicas where frowned upon. Now they are the affordable sensible and usable alternative so long as they also get sold that way and not passed off for something there not!

    After reading a lot of the threads on here recently I also believe it should be a car that can be driven. An over restored car that sits in a field doesn't do it for me, although that will be the result with my twink lol!!

    My 18 will eventually go the same way with a full resto but for now a light going over with lots of rust proofing and hopefully lots of miles/ smiles.

      Good question and why i built mine . I wanted the ultimate useable street legal Escort with all the bits still fitted that doesn't need a gay trailer too move about on . I succeeded .

          Not sure what an ultimate escort would be, at this time I'd say it's something that is ...as it came out the showroom, no changes no modification, and seeing that the escort was developed as a mass produced car, in which nearly every one had one in the 70s ...finding a true proper survivor ...would be the ultimate.

          That takes out every modified and restored car, rally cars ...I doubt if any of them have the original body panels, or engine parts. Twinks RS Mex, etc are well served on the scene, so are not that rare.

          Something bog standard, untouched, but in great condition would be the ultimate escort.

              I was going to start a similar thread too.

              The Rs 1800 is desirable but i wouldnt say it was the ultimate escort.
              the utimate is what you would build for youself , to the spec you wanted.
              therefore my ultimate escort would be one that is already built to what i would want and that car is gerard,s STW 201 R.
              ticks all my box,s that one.
              maybe that,s what sean is buying?

                Ultimate escort is a very hard question to answer, standard low mileage original cars are lovely to look at but driving them takes that originality away and I would be petrified of it getting damaged. For me a car loosely built as a 2.0 rs from a standard car with the bdg zf and atlass ap brakes etc but fully road trimmed so no four links all nicely set up to give a civilised road car not squeezing out every last horsepower. I,m thinking of the bronze bubble arched mk1 on the special build poster, full wood trim kit so all the luxury bits and all the fast bits.
                But i would not part with my normal little mk2 to get it so maybe it is my ultimate escort I can drive it, I can modify it and it makes me happy

                          ^^^ the vatanen car was just vicious..it was certainly the ultimate escort at that time..gives me goose bumps watchin that!


                          I have often thought that a totally bog standard rs1800 would be my favourite car...but..i just know it would be a disappointment to drive.
                          Things move on and in this day and age a mk2 escort would need a pretty impressive spec to bowl you over performance wise..
                          Which takes me to my ultimate escort which would be the car I own..a mk2 Mexico..it has performance which is not far away from any other standard escort but it is rare in standard trim and looks fantastic and pure with its flat front..
                          In second place would be a mk1 1300 sport in white..just like I had back in the day..understated and super rare.

                              My ultimate escort is the RS2000 I own now. I built it exactly as I wanted it. The only thing that I would consider selling it for is an Mk1 RS1600.
