  • Beware y'all....

Spent all weekend doing various bits and pieces to my car after MKII National day; stripped out the master cyclinder, servo tower & alternator - re-painted the damaged area above the chassis rail where the master cylinder had leaked, re-fitted it all, filled up with DOT 5.1 (in case of any further leaks), replaced the tired multi leaf springs with new single leaf units from Burton, fitted new Bilsteins.

I took the car on a short test run to see if all was well, I got about 5 miles from home and decided to pull over and have a look at the ride height now the springs had settled. Just as I was de-accelerating from about 60mph an awful noise eminated from the rear of the car and the back wheels locked up at about 30 mph - not nice !

I ended up having to be recovered home as the car would not budge, I'm thinking blown diff (major bummer as it had just been rebuilt) but upon further investigation I have discovered that the n/s linings on the brake shoes had come adrift and managed to wedge themselves together between the drum and the shoe causing the n/s rear wheel to lock up.

The linings still had plenty of meat on them as I had checked them over the winter but obviously the adhesive used had degraded. This could have been nasty if it had happened at 80mph on the motorway so I can recommend to you all to check out the rear shoes on your cars !

Parts wear even when not being used.

ie. your brake shoes are probarbly 5 or 10 years old !!!

Hence a 30 year old original car with only 15,000 miles on the clock will still need loads spent on it to become safe and useable

Glad you and car not damaged

same thing happened to me on the morning of the cumbria show in my wifes mk6 rs2. the liner came off the shoe, spun round inside the drum and went through the seal on the brake cylinder. heard a bang, so pressed the brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor. brake fluid all over the back wheel.wasnt far from home, so managed to get back using the fading handbrake and slowing through the gears. bit dodgy though.
plenty of meat still left on the shoe too.
                      😯
