Shortly after this picture was taken the engine and gearbox were removed, the rolling shell placed into storage, subsequently de registered and eventually re painted for use in a different promotional campaign.

No Graham, but it would be great if you could throw some more historical facts as to the reason for the replica build on the left and ultimately what happened to it ?

Was it an old shell / car that got tarted up into safari colours ?

Was it new that when finished with for promotional purposes became some other works car ?

The following information comes from Charles Reynolds, who was Peter Ashcroft's much-respected Rally Manager at the time :

The replica was built up, purely and simply, for showroom promotional displays, and was pure 1300GT under the skin. The body shell was structurally standard (notice, no extra side jacking points, for instance), as was all the running gear (they say that the doors, bonnet and boot lid were firmly locked so that the anoraks couldn't go prying about under the skin).

There were several such cars around at the time - if I remember properly, Andrews Heat for Hire had a 'promotional' Escort too ....

After a time it was 'de-commissioned' and stripped out, and may (just maybe) the body shell went off to Mo Gomm to be properly prepared for another event, but there is no record of when, if ever, this was done.

Andrews did have a promotional car, I have a picture somewhere taken outside their offices in Wolverhampton.
