A group 4 car is a term used for an arched rally escort now
No matter whether its modern or historic.

Even the original works cars evolved in group 4 form.

They have continued to evolve even modern historic cars, let alone modern Tarmac monsters!

None of the Escorts were ever homologated into Group 3 - which was for 500-off Grand Touring Cars.
If I recall correctly, in events in the 1960s where the regulations suited the ploy, Group 2 cars could upgrade to Group 3 by making certain (non-homologated) changes to the cars' specs. Examples would have been Mini-Cooper Ss on occasion. In 1964 - 1965, for instance, the 'works' Triumph 2000s were not powerful enough in 'standard' (Group 1 or Group 2) form, so were always fitted with engines having three twin-choke Weber carbs, and ran in Group 3.
Can't remember when, but I think this 'provision' or 'allowance' was withdrawn in the 1970s....

Yes of course, but only temporarily and for a few weeks in the spring of 1968 (Robson, you are an idiot, you should have mentioned this ....). Theoretically, 500 cars had been built by 1 March 1968, which qualified it for Group 3, but as soon as 1,000 cars had been built (and if you'll believe that, you will believe the moon is made of green cheese), the homologation was upgraded to Group 2.
