There was a thread by Leon ( I think) on what makes a grp4 car...

But that'd take some finding now

I don't think its neccesary really, meanings of words and terms evolve.

If I say I'm going to get the 'Hoover' and clean the floor I wouldnt expect someone to get upset when a Dyson comes out. If some bloke started quoting model types, patents from the Hoover company I'd he was insane or at least very boring

We all know that a mains operated portable vaccum cleaner described as Hoover isnt neccesarily one of their products.

In modern rallying grp 4 has evolved into a term that describes a 'big spec' escort with arches, linked etc. Even on my rally car insurance form there were 3 boxes to tick to describe the car 'road rally' 'basic clubman' or 'group 4'.

Its just not worth worrying about in my opinion

A Gp4 car is just that. Anything else is a clubmans car even if it is a full spec Gp4 car but with a Vauxhall or a Millington or whatever engine. A Gp4 car is a specification not a generalisation.

It has evolved into a generalisation or we would not be discussing it.

But it shouldn't. A Gp4 car is just that. Anything else is a club spec car. There is no Gp4 club spec car. It's one or the other and that is purely down to the spec of the car.

It would be like me saying I have RS2000 but it's only got a 1300 x flow and it's not an RS shell but it has the badges so I call it an RS2000.

A group 4 Escort is an 1100L pop shell with a few tin box sections and some extra seam welding . This shell is then rolling on a lorry axle if i remember . ha ha .

Whether is should have is a different thing. It is too late, it has already become a generic term.

Educate people? what for, its not anything very important is it?

To some it is important. To me it is a pet hate of mine when people tell me they have a Gp4 escort and it is no such thing.
