Taking cars to Aus

Hopefully the lads down under can help me here.

My good lady has been offered a couple of different roles in Melbourne, Gee long and a couple on the Gold coast in the past. We are going out there in June next year whilst she does some teaching and to have a look around with a view of setting up camp perminately.

Now part of my agreement to go is that the car's come with me if that happens and it's possible!!

I gather there must be a road worthy ness test and the like, but how about what's leaglly required, age restrictions, modifications.

Both of mine are either period modified or current historic stage spec.

According to information I gathered this year with my enquiries ,you can ONLY import certain cars that are also on an import sheet ,so as far as I understand there are restrictions as to what you can import !But some guys in OZ will fill you in better

100% Correct and you might just have to pay GST which is about 10% Also make sure your car has NO mud anywhere on it and its clean in and out as customs are pretty keen on this, apply for import papers well early and you should nave no issues whatsoever, not sure about other states but cages will restrict your car usage as here in WA, I can only "legally" drive the rally car ïf I'm going to and from an event (I do take it out periodocially though just to keep things moving and so far the police have not stopped me, they have driven past and taken a keen interest in it but I think due to my age they know its not some shit box just made to look nice). Another thing I'm not sure of is rear seat belts, if your cars have rear seats you might have to fit belts.

Finally Western Australia is the only state to come to, if you want a tour pop in for a cuppa and I'll try and help wherever I can

agree with Moose. however Victoria is where its at....unless you want a job.

Be wary in regard to registration as its different for each state. Some states are very tough others not so.

In Vic there is a club permit scheme which the RSOC VIc is a signatory to and it allows for period modficed cars but there's a abit of interpretation.

One thing to remember. Rs's are rare here and enthusiasts likewise, but the guys that are enthusiasts are very hardcore. If you love a v8 then you're gonna love being here.

Either way its a cracking place to live and any pom that lives here and says other wise should sod off back home so we can let another refugee in.....

It all depends where my good lady gets employed as she is on the wanted list. I'm apparently worthless!!

The Uni's that deal with her field are South East or up the Gold Coast.

We are going to be doing a road trip to them over 6 weeks next year and whist she is teaching, I'll be taking a look round.

She's lecturing for a few days at each uni and then we have around 4-5 days between stops so have rented a motorhome.

We then intend to stay on a bit and do some Diving off the GBR.

If it happens, I may well have to sell the FF's and the other road car's I've built up over the years as importing them could cost a fortune.

The cars are my 76 RS2 and my 67 Mini Cooper S (it's a stage car and hope to use it down there). I've had the escort by nearly 2 years and the Mini over 24 years by the time we come over to look around.

Bring all your classic cars cars and bits mate (sell nothing in the uk before you leave). I'm also quite sure others will tell you but you won't regret it.
I don't even bother with the dangerous animal thing anymore, if I see a snake I walk around it if I see a redback I squash it etc

All I'm trying to say is don't sell anything in haste (expecially classic car parts, classic cars etc), I left a few things behind that I wish I didn't as after all I only in effect moved house.
