  • Watch "daily" car values begin to plummet !

Not only are "write-offs" recorded but now I can check whether a car has been subject to previous "insurance claimed" damage and also I can request the accident damaged pictures

Methinks some people will struggle to get the value they after for their car when they come to sell it !

Slightly higher cost than standard HPi check but well worth it

Have been told recently that a company can remove say a cat C or D from the database so it doesn't show when hpi'd. Is this true? Disturbing if it is.

An insurer or vehicle dismantler can pay a premium to have a cars 'Cat' removed or omitted from the database.

This happened recently with a very famous escort that was stolen and declared a total loss.

Yes it is true, and it depends.
My sister recently sold her Focus through the auctions and before they put it up for sale they told her "this chassis no. has been a write-off, so we can't auction the car".

        What

It hadn't been and was not on its third shell, but somehow the car had this mark against its VIN, and for no good reason

So it was possible to get the status changed, then an investigation was launched into how the car came to have the "write-off" status in the first place, I'm not sure what happened, but it just goes to show the system ain't foolproof.

The car has to be inspected before any categories will be removed, and any repair work would need to be as factory and undetectable, and not many people will bother as the costs are prohibitive.

Although I agree with you not knowing the cars true history, I bought this cat C to use as a dog car last year, it just needed a wing and door bolting on which I found in the same colour for £80, so its a bit ridiculous when you consider what a lot of escorts go through to get them roadworthy!

But yes you would want to know if it looked like it had dropped of a cliff previously!

That is true ,, BUT,, the car will always still show on HPI as " condition inspected "

this tells anyone that the car has previously been on a cat c / d etc but has been correctly repaired and had the cat removed

so even tho the cat, has been removed its pointless as you still know it once was on HPI as a damaged car

Reason I am interested in this is because a friend of mine is buying a Merc CLK Convertable on a Cat C. He is planning on repairing it then selling it on without mentioning the Cat (Which I strongly disagree with) He is on about this company (Told to him by his insurance company no less) that can remove the Cat C so nothing shows up when the car is HPI'd.

I would have thought this was illegal??? I would be very p1ssed off if I bought a car after it was HPI'd only to find out that it had been an insurance write off!!!

If the damage was superficial, i.e. bolt on a wing and a door then it's not going to be easy to detect. But anybody buying a 10K+ car should get it professionally checked or borrow a good paint gauge. If the car's been resprayed at any time it'll show up.

i heard that a few years ago you could by a damaged car, repair it and have it sold before it even appeared on the list !! always a way around stuff.
what i need is a high horse like the others have !

you can still buy catergory c damaged commercial vehicles and some not all dont have to be inspected last 2 ive bought ive applied for log book and not shown anything against when selling the vehicles im always up front that they have been repaired and any pictures are shown theres a loop hole though if the buyer dosnt ask you about previous damage you are not obbliged to tell them depends how up front and honest you are but if you do your home work right you will probably take some one to look for you and a hpi report before you hand your cash over
