  • So when was the low point for Escort prices?..

We are all familiar with how much it costs to own a sporting Escort these days, but when was the low point for prices??..In 1986 i paid £850 for a nice mk1 1300 sport and in 1989 i paid £1100 for a mint 1980 1600 sport. My mexico was bought for £2600 at national day in 1990.So when was the bottom of the market price wise?..I know tales of bargains always abound but i am thinking more the general trend.

I think around late 80's to late 90's, picked up all my std escorts for between £400 - £800. My 1st RS2000 for £1000 and my present one for £2000 in 1997

          I purchased a Mk1 RS2000 in 1991 for £550, another bargain was a Mk2 Mexico in the same year for £900

The insurance was killing these cars at this time so people were getting rid of them

Mid to late 90's they were literally worth nothing.
I had several Mk1's given yes given to me back then.

The best of the bunch was a 1300E it was a bitsa but it was all good bits.
Very good 1300E shell in Jade Green. Lotus steels, chocolate fishnets, six point cage, cracking 1600 cross flow with big wing sump. All for nowt.

                I bought a Mk2 RS2000 Custom from Wrexham for £200 & gave £400 for a Black Custom with 3 months taX & MOT.

One of the best was my first ever Twin Cam a family friend owned a scrapyard, so I always got a call when he had a Mk1 come in.
One day the phone rang & the conversation went something like this "Mark I've just had an old Escort come in, it's got quarter bumpers & flared wings on it & looks like someone has put a 1600 crossflow in it."
So off I went expecting a 1300 sport or similar, lifted the bonnet & sure enough there was a crossflow in it, but was a heavy duty shell with all the holes cables & brackets that you would find on a twincam. The chassis number wasn't visible enough to make out & the car was hanging.
I went in the office & the logbook & tags were in an envelope. So I checked them out & started haggling. I was told I could have it for £120 I obviously haggled & gave £90 for it. Sure enough it had BB49 on the tags & was an October 68 Twincam. The log book hust said Escort saloon.

                I also had a Sunset Red RS1600 for £800.

But no one wanted Escorts back then & they were everywhere.
If the prices plumeted over night & they went back to those values & everyone lost interest them I'd still be messing with them.
                Mark....

I bought RUN 200N for £600 in 1995. Bought YUE 477S for £3000 in 1999. Most of my RS cars in the late 80's & 90's were never more than £1000

                    I,d agree with late 80's early 90's.
My friend used to race mk2's in 2 litre hot rods, £100 for rot free 2 doors!!! He only bought sound ones
Took longer to prepare rusty ones!!
                    You couldn't give a 4 door mk 1/2 away!!

My brother bought a mk2 Mexico in 2003 for £1000

He drove it home , but it turned out to be a Basket Case

But the spares he could have sold off it would have fetched £1000

                          Still got it
