  • anyone work at ford

i have a ford galaxy 02 1.9 tdi plate,we went to wales last week end 6 up & the dog & roof box drove for about 120 miles then noticed temp guage rise over 90deg,so luckily services only 1 mile away pulled in checked coolant level & was only just some in the bottle let it cool down the took expasion cap off,bit of hissing then the coolant level returns to max so let cool down a little more before we move off, check coolant level just a smidge over max,did another 30 miles to distination, had another look coolant below min again,so let it cool down release cap level returns to max, return journey check level on max down about 110 miles guage didnt move off 90 deg all the way pulled over in services to check ok again coolant level below min, let it cool down undo cap level returns to max,i have a reciept for a cambelt & waterpump done last year ,i have only had the car about a month, had a quick check at home it has a good return back into the expansion bottle, heaters hot,any thoughts,as the wife child minds & cant have it packing up on if its full of kids

Could you have an airlock somewhere in the system? Which is getting compressed when at temperature? You can't compress water so that wouldn't take any less space up in the cooling system.

Yep sounds like an air lock!

I agree with an air lock .Fillet up to the very top, don't put cap on and sit and rev it at about 2-3 Thousand RPM for five minutes or so.should get rid of air lock then

run up to temp checking all hoses and rad are same temp if not try to remove air from htr matrix hose, still a problem pressure test system and sniffer test system,if these tests show clear go for circulation checks. i would say stiffer test would show up exhaust gas in the system

                  Don't use 6th gear if it's a manual !

When you've got a trailer on (like I had) the extra load on the engine warms the coolant up just enough to boil it over, the revs in 6th gear at cruising speed are so low that the water pump can't pump enough volume of water around to cool the engine.

I fixed my problem by running in 5th gear - solved it immediately !
                  Cheers Rob.

When not loaded 6th gear is fine at motorway speeds for 100's of miles at a time !
                    Cheers Rob.

The coolant level drops below max on most VW diesels when hot due to the expansion of the many hoses, so level should always be checked when the engine is cold as with all engines! If its got aircon check the condition of the cooling fins on the condenser in front of your coolant radiator, if they're damaged, "as in flat" this drastically reduces airflow! Hope this helps!
